Neil Young's Greatest Hits Question
I'm beginning to give up on ever seeing a Neil Young Box Set. The Greatest Hits CD comes out Tues, and while it's disappointing, it's better than nothing. BTW, Amazon has the track listing a little wrong, here is the right list:
1. Down By The River
2. Cowgirl In The Sand
3. Cinnamon Girl
4. Helpless
5. After The Gold Rush
6. Only Love Can Break Your Heart
7. Southern Man
8. Ohio
9. The Needle And The Damage Done
10. Old Man
11. Heart Of Gold
12. Like A Hurricane
13. Comes A Time
14. Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)
15. Rockin' In The Free World
16. Harvest Moon
My question is this: There is a CD/DVD version. The DVD only has two videos on it, but some sort of DVD audio feature. Here's what Neil's official site says about it:
Because Sound Matters. Neil Young's first ever single disc greatest hits collection is a long-awaited retrospective from one of rock's most influential and enduring singer-songwriters. With 16 selections spanning his entire career since 1969, GREATEST HITS features some of the greatest hits of rock 'n' roll, period. The CD + DVD combo pack features the original master mixes now in super-saturated DVD-Stereo for the highest quality sound available on DVD. Plus, the DVD includes music videos for "Harvest Moon" and "Rockin' In The Free World," a photo gallery, lyrics, and web links.
Do you think that would make it worth getting? I just have a regular DVD player and am not sure what "super-saturated DVD-stereo is, let alone if it's worth another $8.

I don't know the answer to your question but 2 things:
- the CD/DVD set is only $2 more than the CD at CD Universe (of course, they charge shipping)
- for selection alone, Decade seems better than the new one. There are people selling that used on Amazon for about the same price as the new CD

This is a terrible "hits" collection IMHO. Reeks of "contractual obligation filler." Young's 30-plus year career certainly has had more than 16 "hits." I'd expect a 2-disc set at the very least. There's what, 3 songs from the last 20 years on there? I'm skipping it.

If if have Decade, you already have most of that (everything but the last three, in fact.
With Decade already out, they should have concentrated on newer material.

I've avoided Decade all these years waiting for a remastered box set. I'm finally giving up.
I still have lots of those $2 off CD coupons from BB. According to their website, the CD will be on sale at $11.99 and the CD/DVD will be regular priced at $19.99. That's a pretty big difference. I think I'll spring for the CD at $10 unless I'm really missing out on a sonic wonder on that DVD.

I don't know how the DVD sounds, but I can say that the 2 videos are ok, but not things you'll watch many times. Now, Wonderin' - there's a great video.
Decade is sort of worth it for the handful of songs that you can't get anywhere else. I especially like Campaigner & Sugar Mountain. But I got mine just for those few songs for a couple of bucks back when I was in BMG or one of those other clubs.

Back to my thread:
How's this for a cluster-fuck : I bought the CD+DVD at Borders. It was subtly different from the regular version (DVD specs on back and a different skg number). They had it at Borders labled On Sale for $19.99 but it rang up at $15.99 (the same as their sale price of the regular disc). Imagine my suprise when I open up the case and find ONE DISC! There wasn't a DVD, just a regular CD. I put it in my DVD player and sure enough, it read it as an audio CD. Same with my computer. I take it back to Borders and they tell me it's a hybrid. I explain to them it's not, that a hybrid has a DVD side and a CD side and this just has one side. They opened another CD+DVD case and it too had one CD only. I think that WB made a huge mistake and packaged the set in the wrong case without the DVD.
Anyone have similar or differeent expierence with this package? I'm thinking of calling WB music in the morning.

I picked this up today and the DVD was included but you had to pry up the plastic holding the CD and it was underneath. It took a fair amount of effort and seems poorly designed.

Glad to hear it sounded really good, though.
