PVR question - Why can I not do this, or can I?

I want to record one tv show while watching another. My cable company is waiting on TV Guide before they will issue dual drive recorders so I asked them for their existing single drive PVR until the new ones are released. (I also want to keep my present tuner so this may be their problem)

I want to split the cable (before the tuner), hook it up separate from the existing tuner, then to the TV with an S Video cable. (the sound will be channeled through an AVR)

Their present 'system' is to remove the existing tuner then install the PVR but one can only have one station tuned at the same time.

The main reason I stick with the cable company is that the PVR is only $1 per month. If I bought a PVR or went TIVO the cost would be much greater.

Is there something incorrect about my idea?

Your cable company's PVR is only single tuner? That's really odd; do you know what brand/model it is?

You should be able to split the signal;
...................... -> DVR box
wall -> splitter
...................... -> directly to TV

I don't know about using SVideo, unless your AVR can accept the coax and output it via SVideo.

Before we got our HDDVR, we had a separate HD box and DVR box, and split the cable to get to that point.

If you split it, however, you will probably only be able to access the 'basic' cable channels on the non-box side.

Apart from stability, my cable co's DVR is slightly better than the Dish PVR we used to have.

Don't know what model it is.

The diagram you drew was exactly what I wanted to do.

Their head installer called me saying their original people were wrong and that yes, they can do what I wanted but it will cost me another $11.95 per month if I want their PVR box and keep the HD tuner box as well. So, because they cannot yet givbeme the service to record a saparate channel, they want to surcharge me until they get their dual tuner/dual drive HDPVR's ready.
