Retro Game Challenge #7 (9/13-9/19)
Week 7 done walked off the plank! Arrrrr!
The Rules:
So far we have only been using MAME to play the games, but that can change, if the winner so chooses.
To enter, you just play one of the games and post a screenshot (F12 key in MAME) with your score.
The deadline to post your high scores will be Sunday 11:59 PM Eastern US time.
When you post a high score, make sure to pick a new game to play by Monday. The sooner the better.
Please don't use continues or savestates for any scores you submit.
I am going to host the current ROMs and list of all the past winners and high scores here.
The Games:
(click the titles for info and how to play)
Discs of Tron (Environmental) - Winning Score: Mordred 95400

Robocop (World Rev. 4) - Winning Score: Lampei 727600

Vs. 10-Yard Fight - Winning Score: Roto 78950

The Prize:
Whoever gets the high score for one of the games picks the next game that replaces it, so we should always have 3 to choose from. The game should be over 10 years old and hopefully easy enough for everyone to get running. You also get your nameengraved permanently etched onto this eye catching trophy with a genuine Sharpie!

OK, since apparently I'm the only one staying up late tonight, I'll go ahead and put an easy one up.

This game conspires to steal allowances from children who only want to be like their hero, Officer Alex J. Murphy!
It doesn't even give you any extra health after defeating level one. So of course I get about 10 feet into level two before I'm hacked up with a chainsaw.
This was why I quit playing arcade games before this came out. I saw the writing on the wall with Gauntlet! Quarter munchers

You've won enough anyway, we don't need you
Unless you were winning because nobody else was playing
I was going to wait for someone else to post the first score of 10-Yard Fight, but usually I wouldn't have to wait this long.

This is a beatable score, but you have to actually know how to play it to get this far so here are some tips:
Press button 1 to send the the player running across the screen upfield where there are the fewest defenders. You can either send him into the open field for a passing play or you can send him directly into a linebacker to block for you if you want to try to run the ball.
Once the ball is in play this isn't completely like real football. The quarterback can only pass when facing upfield with button 1. You can toss it to either running back with button 2.
Once you've tossed the ball to one of the "running backs" you can either use button 1 to pass it to the guy you sent running upfield or you can run the ball.
When a tackler grabs you, move left and right to break the tackle. You'll have to get good at breaking tackles to get a decent score.
If you score a touchdown you have to kick an extra point. This doesn't work like real football either. You have to run backwards before you kick it or you will get tackled. So just run straight back and press button one when the arrow is in the middle of the goal posts.

What are you doing here anyway joe? I assumed you had me pick a game because you wouldn't be here this week either. You should've picked something yourself.
Next time I win one you can take that pick.

That's why it always says in the first post to pick the game you want when you post a score.
If your score wins, that's what we'll play.
Discs of Tron should work ok with a keyboard and mouse. Use the arrow keys to move Tron around and use the mouse to move the crosshairs and to fire. I almost asked Keyed to pick something else because of the controls, but it was a fairly popular game and I know there are plenty of people that like it enough to figure out a way they can control it.

I think it's pretty funny that Ms. Pacman hasn't been picked yet. The last time I won, way back when, I just assumed someone else would pick it soon enough. Instead we keep getting games that I've never actually seen like Parodius and Star Castle

What does everyone think about allowing continues for Robocop? I think the game is way too hard for just one quarter. You have to get through the first two levels before it will give you any extra health. The score resets to 0 when you continue, but the bonus for the later levels gets higher, so I'm not sure if it's a good idea or not. I think allowing continues would make the game more interesting to play though.

Maybe that's the way to go.
I'll give today for everyone to post their opinions about it and make the official decision tomorrow. Personally I think Robocop would be a little more interesting if we made it easier.

No continues and set the energy level to high. It's hard enough to keep half your energy after the first boss.
edit: BTW, this is before I set the default settings.
