Hawaii-series premiere 9/01

PILOT- "HAWAIIAN JUSTICE"

Spoiler:
Hawaii can seduce just about anyone -- cops and criminals alike. Murder, drug-running and organized cartels represent a small sample of the big-city casework that the Hawaiian police force confronts. The diverse group of cops and detectives may work against a breathtaking backdrop of jungles and seascapes, but they can never take a vacation from the tangle of local and international criminals who constantly cross their paths. It's never a "typical" crime scene and these are not TV's "typical" cops - which is exactly what makes "Hawaii" so alluring. Welcome to the other side of paradise as the cops probe a bizarre series of decapitations. Michael Biehn ("The Terminator"), Sharif Atkins (NBC's "ER"), Ivan Sergei (NBC's "Crossing Jordan"), Eric Balfour ("Six Feet Under"), Aya Sumika, Cary Tagawa and Peter Navy Tuiasosopo also star. Jeff Eastin is the creator and executive producer. Daniel Sackheim ("The Lyon's Den") directs.

This show's been getting beaten up badly by critics, but their's nothing else on tonight so I'll check it out. Though the title of the pilot makes it sound even more cheesy then it looks.

My NBC affiliate has been asleep on the HD switch since the Olympics ended. I hope that doesn't continue into tonight for this show.

I hope it doesn't suck too badly that it can't be saved by some better writing that will actually figure out, "Hey! We're in Hawaii!" Sure, Hawaii has crime like anywhere else, but it's the local people that make it unique. Plus there have been interesting stories like that of Lisa Au. No relation to me.

Please NBC, don't turn this into North Shore, which should be titled "Any hotel resort on the beach with white chicks who bitch and moan." If anything, look at what CSI has done using Vegas as a backdrop. Vegas is a main character, as well as it's people & patrons.

Anyways, it can't be any worse than Hawaiian Heat.

Hawaii Five-o showed that a cop show could be well done using lots of local talent. Magnum to a lesser degree, he was always conning his friends. Here's hoping that Hawaii can fall into the Five-o mode.

At least the uniformed female officer was hot, but how can they only have one lady on the cast?

Then they need to spruce up the show by going to the beach a little more. There has to be some form of crime on the beach.

Ok.. have no feeling towards any of the characters. Nice to see Andy Bumatai get some work

It's hard for me to watch because the story isn't hooking me and i just keep waiting for shots around the island that remind me of home.

Too much in the first episode, they need to spread it out.

Nice. Make the female officer a slut already.

I liked it. But I do agree that they tried to put too much into the first episode. We need to meet the characters. This seemed like a mid-season episode where you know the characters and are thrust right into the action.

All I learned about the characters:

token fat samoan loves donuts, check.
female cop = slut, check.
loose cannon, check.
careful partner afraid of losing job, check.
main character that could go either way, check.
older wiser partner that doesn't want to share experience, check.

nary a name to be remembered.

I usually don't check out new shows until season 2 because all the ones I end up liking get canned. I checked this out anyway. I will watch again to see where it goes.

yeah I was thinking that too.... a mean they threw in a ton of sub story lines at us right away before we even knew who was who.. Then again maybe that is what a show needs to now to get out the gate fast enough not be canned?

The writing was a little cliché with stuff like "...but we get the job done." and same for the characters but then again after sooooo many cop shows over the years I'm not sure it's that easy to come up with new characters.

I did like the setting a ton with a lot of outside location shots that really showed off Hawaii.. I'll keep watching it.. Not a great show but for an action cop show it was ok IMO.. Should make it a season I would think..

No, a root canal is bad. A mouthful of dog shit is bad. A foreclosure on your house is bad. This show was awful. What absolute garbage. Not a single likable character, each one a bigger asshole than the other. Calling an innocent victim a cokewhore, and then lying about it to her face does not endear a major character to the audience. You might think it was the writers' feeble attempt to show the cop as a "real person", but I don't think they are that clever. This is off the air by Columbus Day, and I say aloha brudda.

Hmmm, say something nice. Say something nice, ummmmmmm.

The HD coverage of the episode was in 5.1 and sounded pretty sweet.

Don't forget the classic... "I'm a detective, it's what I do." When checking out the female detective.

"Hey I'm from Chicago. We don't have sharks in Chicago." - Det. John Decain (Sharif Atkins)

Was there any other less obvious way to link to him ER?

While I liked the show last night, I did feel that it was rushed and a little too much for one episode. I'll give it a few more eps.

I though it was a good first episode. But then again I was expecting a show that wasn't too dramatic ans had some funny one liners.

It is new and up against reruns. There will be two episodes next week. I guess it is better than nothing.

Yep.

This was bad. They cancel Boomtown and put this nonsense on.

Even something didn't seem right about that uniformed officer. She had the body and the tan but her face was just off. Slightly butterish.

I also love how you can show severed heads during the so-called family hour, but heaven forbid there are nipples at any time on network television.

On Monday, Jay Mohr said that Last Comic Standing 3 would be on the for the next eight weeks, which is a little longer than most of the new shows on NBC.

Was that a premonition for Hawaii and Father of the Pride?

just kidding

I hate to say it but I'd rather watch North Shore than this.
