Unfortunately the link is down right now, but GamesIndustry has been a reliable source in the past.

I was thinking of finally getting one since I don't know what the DS will cost or when it's coming out. This may have sealed the decision.

Clear act of desperation. They are going the way of Sega! I'm selling all my Nintendo stuff immediately, before it's too late.

I'm tempted to get another NES one and keep it as a collectible, or as eBay fodder.

HURRY! Nintendo is going to be SEGA!!!!!

But in reality, if the DS release date holds true (November) its to help sell off the remaining SP's. Still no official price for the DS yet (I am expecting $149.99)

Link is up. Here is the whole story.

Pint-sized console drops in price ahead of the arrival of the DS

The price point of the Game Boy Advance SP is to drop to $79.99 in the United States later this week, according to sources at US retailers, with a cut in Europe expected to follow in the coming months.

The $20 cut should help to stimulate sales of the handheld device in the run-up to Christmas, but more importantly, it will position the GBA SP on the market relative to Nintendo's forthcoming DS handheld, which is set to launch in the USA later this year.

Reports last month from sources close to Nintendo Japan suggested that the DS will arrive at $179.95 in North America on November 11th; however, since then it's been suggested that the device could be even cheaper, with a $149.99 price point being mooted by some US retailers.

No equivalent European price cut has been mentioned as yet, but retail sources in the UK told us this morning that a GBA SP price cut is widely expected in the run up to Christmas, with news of the US cut driving speculation that the European cut will come sooner rather than later.

Good, you can use the money to buy DVDs with all those Madden 2005 coupons you stole.

On topic, I'm just hoping this sets up the DS to come in at the $149.99 price point. That is right at the limit I feel comfortable spending on one.

Good news about the SP though. They will probably be flying off the shelves during the holidays as usual. The $79 price point applies to all SPs so I would recommend grabbing one of those Retro NES ones if you were thinking about getting one. Definitely the coolest looking handheld ever.

Nintendo Cuts Price On Game Boy SP

POSTED: 1:35 pm EDT September 1, 2004

Nintendo has permanently dropped the price on the flip-top version of its hand-held Game Boy video game system.

The color screen Game Boy Advance SP will now retail for $79, down $20 from the price it has had since debuting more than a year ago.

A marketing executive with Nintendo said the price cut should bring the SP further into the mainstream, and she denied that there's any connection to the coming launch of the Game Boy DS, a dual-screen model.

Nintendo says the DS isn't meant as a replacement for the aging SP.

The SP was the top-selling game player in the United States last year, but a market research firm says sales of all portable gaming hardware were down 18 percent in the first half of this year.

Competition in the market is expected to increase when Sony releases its PSP portable player in Japan later this year and in the United States in 2005.

Fry's in Southern CA has had the SP for $85 for a couple of months now. I wonder how low it will go now?

I bought my GBA SP on launch date, figuring it would be a good way to kill time on my daily commute on the train. But I've barely used it at all... turns out I end up just reading books or taking a nap instead... I was thinking about selling my GBA SP, but with a price cut, the selling price would go down too. argh. I should've sold it sooner. Oh well, maybe I'll just keep it now. haha.

I would love to buy a portable gaming system for 79.99, but all of the nintendo unit look to grainy to me. So I think I will wait for either DS or PSP and see which is less grainy to my eyes.

I might pick one up if any one releases a Texas Holdem Game with decent AI for the GBA.
