Retro Game Challenge #5 (8/30-9/5)

Week 5 is over!

The Rules:
So far we have only been using MAME to play the games, but that can change.
To enter, you just play one of the games and post a screenshot with your score.
The deadline to post your high scores will be Sunday 11:59 PM Eastern US time.
When you post a high score, make sure to pick a new game to play by Monday. The sooner the better.
Please don't use continues or savestates for any scores you submit.
I am going to host the current ROMs and list of all the past winners and high scores here.

The Games:
(click the titles for info and how to play)

Congo Bongo - Winner: devilshalo 84440

Gyruss - Winner: Mordred 203050

Gokujyou Parodius! - Winner: joeblow69 403300

The Prize:
Whoever gets the high score for one of the games picks the next game that replaces it, so we should always have 3 to choose from. The game should be over 10 years old and hopefully easy enough for everyone to get running. You also get your name engraved with a genuine Sharpie on this eye catching trophy!

This Week's Winners:

This looks like the best batch of games we've had so far. I'm no big Congo Bongo fan, but even that one seems like it might be fun.

I had to feed it about $1 to get this score. I think the levels start over after this one. I just didn't quite make the last jump to see. I'll let someone else get Gyruss started.

Oh, some tips:
Congo Bongo is definitely a keyboard game, imo.
Gyruss works great on a gamepad with an analog thumbstick
Parodius works best with hallucinogens.

Man, Gyruss is a pain! You have to hit either left or right twice depending on which way you want to go so you can circle around to the top of the screen.

Gyruss worked with an 8 way joystick, up and down work too. Click the games in the first post. There is actually good info there.

Parodius sure is strange. The levels don't seem to always show up in the same order, either. The first time I got to level 3, it was the easter island guys who spit neon cheerios at you. The second time I got to level 3, it was some party world, with balloons, fruit, and I think kittens with chainsaws.

Best advice I can give to get a high score: Go for the gold bells. If you see a bunch of bells together, shoot them until they all turn gold, then grab them all at once. You'll get all sorts of big bonuses. If you pick up the bells when they are other colors, weird things may happen.

Anyone know why Parodius won't show up as playable in Mame32p 0.84u5? It says the file is failing the audit, but I assume the rest of you are using the same .zip.

It works fine in regular MAME32. I gave up on Plus as my primary version of MAME. I had the same problem with Parodius.

Crap, you have to try out the little blue guy on the paper airplane. Fully powered up, he is practically INVICIBLE! Plus, he dons a great big blue condom!

I'm sure that'sjust a stepping stone to whatever they put in Sexy Parodius. That came out in 96, so it's not eligible to be selected for 2 more years

It has child chicken molesting corn!

I've never played the arcade version of Sexy Parodius but I had a copy of the game for the Playstation one. There was no child molesting corn (or even cut scenes that I remember) and the "sexy" was kinda overrated. If a giant belly dancer trying to stomp on your ship is sexy then I obviously don't know what sexy is.
