Cheap receiver and speaker recommendations?

I just bought a 36" toshiba crt TV and im now looking for some speakers for it. I am hoping to get everything for under $200. Would my best bet be to get computer speakers and hook the up to my RCA connector on the TV/DVD player?

Or do I get a receiver and home theater speakers? If so, any recommendations?

i just picked up a 6.1 onkyo receiver from eCost so now I need speakers for that.
I was looking at the fluance SX-HTB and AV-HTB. Any thoughts on those 2?
Any other set of 5 or 6 speakers for under $300 that you all recommend?

hey heat hows it going ? (we got a dvd trade in progress)

take my advice and don't buy a cheap set. I have bought many onmy to regret it cause I couldn't wait and wanted everything now. I thought i was satisfied but felt something was missing and that was presense.

I didn't take the advice of many saying to uild slow and start with a nice set of front speakers and them buy when you have money to finish the rest.

let me tell you that a nice set of front speakers will image WAY better than a cheap full set of 5.1 HTIB speakers. it will surround you!!!!! trust me you will spend money upgrades after upgrades and better off starting slow and buying a nice set of front speakers.

fluance does eem to be ok for the price, heard good things about them but I would still buy a quality set of front speakers. my Paradigm Monitor 7 Tower speakers sound great and image nice and put out some serious bass for a tower speaker. I paid $600 new but you can find a mint set on HT sites for sale or ebay for around $300

our reciever is good enough, don't let people tell you otherwise. I have an Onkyo TX-DS494 and it drives my Paradigms fine.

Thanks for the advice. More and more people are telling me to get a nice set of fronts first then save up to buy the rest. I just have no idea how to shop for speakers. If I goto bestbuy what do I look for in a good speaker?

Please don't take this the wrong way but IMHO there are no "good" speakers at that store.

I normally recommend a complete audition with your own source material for any speaker purchase but given your budget I would first look for another store in your area or consider some online options

Good luck

brian is right heat, do not buy speakers at best buy.

don't buy before you listen. I have done it and you will be disappointed.

goto a local HT store and try out some speakers. just sit and pick the ones in your price range that sound nice to you.

the cheapest ones I found were PSB and Paradigm in my area and I liked the paradigm and got a good deal on them. $600

but thats what you will spend for a new set of entry level decent speakers.

I love my Monitor 7's

heat23, congrats on your new system, those Fluances should do nicely as a first system.
