Zardoz why the hell did Sean Connery take this role?

The man who was James Bond reduced himself to Zed and a movie called Zardoz which comes from the childrens story "The Wizard of Oz". The DVD co-stars Charlotte Rampling (Angel Heart) but not a Vodka Martini or bottle of Bolingers to be seen or sipped.

Let's just say that he wasn't at the pinnacle of his career at that point. Not that Connery's ever been too picky when it comes to accepting roles.

Not even Sean Connery could make a diaper look good.

I would say if it weren't for James Bond (and maybe "The Untouchables") Connery would barely be regarded except to film buffs. His non-Bond roles have been far more bad than good imho. "Entrapment"? "The Avengers"?

I agree that Connery has chosen some bad roles over the years, but for every Zardoz, there is a good non-Bond film like: The Anderson Tapes, The Great Train Robbery, Time Bandits, The Hunt for Red October. That said, there were always disasters like Meteor and Five Days One Summer. Maybe this should be a poll...

the commentary by the director on the dvd about how the girls on horseback really, really didn't want to be topless more or less sums up the whole movie.....in my opinion

Really?

Finding Forrester, Medicine Man, The Hunt for Red October, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade come to mind.

You forgot The Name of the Rose, some of his best work IMO.

The Man Who Would Be King with Connery, Michael Caine, and directed by John Huston (and from about the Zardoz period) is a bona-fide classic.

The same is true for all other formats of the movie, including VHS, laserdisc and theatrical release prints.

I hate you for posting that picture, AGuyNamedMike. We are now sworn enemies. MY EYES! MY EYES!

Someday, when you least expect it, I will send you a jpeg of the cover of John Lennon's Two Virgin's album. Then you will know true pain.

Sean played Jack Kehoe of 'The Molly Maguires' a coal mining film as their leader, that was a good role.

What I think is really funny about that picture is that they make his costumeand hair laughably "futuristic", but he's got a plain old-west-style gun.

My wife just walked by and looked over my shoulder. The picture made her happy.

What? Zardoz is a cult classic. What's to be embarrased about?
