The Cure land their first Top 10 album in America in years

Knew this was bound to happen what with their recent popularity resurgence. Congratulations Bob!

From MTV News:

With their Curiosa touring festival less than three weeks off, the Cure land at #7 after selling more than 90,000 copies of their self-titled 13th album.

This is a real shocker to me...I know they have a dedicated fanbase but wow. Well, it's little things like this that make me just a bit less pessimistic about popular music.

Isn't this their first top 10 album in America EVER? They never were really big outside of the alternative set... I think "Love Song" from Disintegration is the only song that was really big in a mainstream way on release...

Maybe it's only in the top ten because all of the Cure faithful are buying it, but everything else is selling at lower levels?

Which is still quite an accomplishment, to maintain your fanbase while everything else is spiraling down the toilet.

Suprising news but great. I'm still trying to form an opinion of the new CD. I think their output has really uneven since "Wish". Once Porl Thompson and Boris Wiliams left, they band was never quite the same.

They never left, which makes their sudden popularity even more bewildering. People act like they haven't been releasing crap ever since 1990.

Wish debuted at No. 2 in 1992. Wild Mood Swings and Disintegration peaked at No. 12. Janet Jackson's song Miss You Much kept Love Song from getting to no. 1 on the singles chart.

But that's just the point. They HAVE been releasing crap since 1990. Just kidding. Well, only partially. I really gave up on the Cure after their last two discs. I'll give the new one a chance one day.

I think "Disintegration" was their last really strong album.

"Wish" had its moments, and I will cop to actually liking "Friday I'm in Love," but it's nowhere near up to where their previous efforts -- Disintegration, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, The Head on the Door, and Pornography.

"Wild Mood Swings" was like "Wish"-lite. I mean, the songs were okay, but there just wasn't much going on there. Aside from Smith singing a duet with himself in "The Thirteenth," there's just nothing memorable there.

"Bloodflowers" is a tough one. I get the feeling that I should've like it better than I did, and when I do occasionally get the urge to listen to it I'm thinking it's not too bad, but I seldom want to listen to it. Sort of reminds me of "Faith" in that respect, I suppose, but "Faith" is a much stronger album, it's just kind of intense and not a lot of fun to listen to.

cuT HEre from 2002's Greatest Hits is one of my all time favorite Cure songs. Was an instant favorite with me where "The End Of The World" is just warming up to me after hearing it first back on April 30th on Leno.

I'm glad for them (first saw them in 1985), but I haven't found this latest release to be anything special. It's OK, but I'm surprised it's actually in the Top 10...
