DVD Talk Gold Edition
I'd suggest some classics such as Halloween, The Exorcist, The Thing, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Shinning.
for some more camp horror, I would reccommend The Evil Dead Trilogy and From Dusk Till Dawn.

Are you talking old-school horror?
Or gore-horror?
Or jump-scare horror?
Or creepy-atmospheric horror?
Or Carrot-Top-In-A-Movie horror?

I don't get too scared at horror movies, so my favorites tend to be ones I found intriguing rather than "scary". My favorite horror movie is The Devil's Backbone. Not sure if it's really scary or more "atmospheric."

Surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet... Event Horizon still remains one of the scariest movies I've seen. Not mainstream horror per se, but certainly a scary movie.

Here's some Great scary flicks:
1. The Exorcist
2. The Exorcist III
3. Suspiria (even if you hate this movie, watch it all the way through, you will see one of the scariest endings in a horror movie IMO)
4. The Thing (John Carpenter)

A lot of people list Exorcist 3 on these lists.
That might be a good one to try because it can be had from the Wal Mart $5.50 bin.
I watched like half of it last night, but since it was late I fell asleep. Probably will finish it tonight.

Dont forget about In the Mouth of Madness ...john carpenter and yet again Sam Neill....he really likes horror flicks.
I also think Hellraiser II
Original Nightmare on Elm Street (back in the day)
and The Exorcist
