Best Sean Penn Performance

Ode to Rivero I suppose, but I just saw "At Close Range" and was really amazed at what a powerful movie that was. It was more a Christopher Walken performance piece in which he was great, but early Sean Penn was raw as well.

Anyway, many will argue with me, but I didn't think "Mystic River" was his best performance even though he stole the Oscar from Bill...but that is another story.

So which do you think is his best performance?

Of the movies I've seen with him, I think he was incredible in 21 Grams. I just saw Mystic River last night, and although he was great in it too, I thought he had a deeper role in 21 Grams, and he portrayed more emotion in 21 than Mystic River. One thing that might have also made me not like Mystic River as much was that damn score. I wish there was an option where you can shut it off.

At Close Range. The final scene alone is testament to Penn's gift.

He's great in all those films, but I think it's a toss up between:

Dead Man Walking and Sweet and Lowdown.

While I don't think Bad Boys was his best performance to date, the fact that his performance in the film is so genuine and the fact that the film was shot about 22 years ago shows how gifted Penn was as a dramatic actor from the get-go.

Hey scott1598, you've got Spyware on your machine. Unless you intentionally attached the link to "gift" in Norm's post.

Although I have yet to see a bad performance from him. He was great in 21 Grams, i am sam, Mystic River, Sweet and Lowdown and yes, even U-Turn.
