Santana slams "corny-a$$ white people"

This entire blurb is from AntiMusic.com:

Blabbermouth reports: Pioneering Latin-rock guitarist Carlos Santana has slammed Ozzy Osbourne as one of "corny-ass white people" while reprimanding the American media for failing to give due credit to jazz artist Elvin Jones who died recently.

Jones' death passed unnoticed without even a mention in the papers, something which Santana believes is due to the racist attitude of the press.

"I'm really embarrassed for this nation, and for MTV and VH1 and Rolling Stone, because it was a very racist thing not to acknowledge this most important musician when he passed," Santana was quoted as saying in The San Diego Union-Tribune.

"For them to play up Ozzy Osbourne and other corny-ass white people, but not Elvin, is demeaning and I'm really embarrassed to live in this country," he added. [see full story for more]

To be fair, MTV was one of the first places to report Elvin Jones' death, a few hours after it was reported on the wire services. Most of the major print media also covered his passing. To Carlos, if you are going to accuse others of racism, you might want to refrain from using racist terms while doing so. The lack of major coverage had more to do with popularity then race. Ray Charles and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes both received a lot of media coverage when they died.

It's ok for non-whites to make racist comments about whites. Didn't you get the memo?

Face it Santana, Jazz just ain't big like Rock music.

It is so funny when celebs make comments without thinking first. I mean a rational person would realize that Ray Charles got a decent amount of coverage, he isn't a "corny-ass-white peson."

I think it has all to do with the fact that jazz isn't in most american's concious right now. Hasn't been for at least 50 years. If they put Elvin Jones on the front page of every newspaper in the country, how many would actually know who that was? I wouldn't. But it would make for an interesting read to learn about one of the greats.

Just makes himself look like a jackass.

And to add to the original poster, it is a popularity contest. If it was about talent, Lisa "left-eye" Lopez would have barely gotten a wink of coverage next to the coverage of Layne Staley's death that same week. But this is America, it isn't about talent, so the exact opposite happened.

I read a beautiful tribute to Elvin in a publication where I expected to find one: The Village Voice. Maybe Carlos should read that and let his subscription to Tiger Beat lapse.

Racism works both ways. This is a perfect example.

Santana is a stupid, ignorant, racist PIG.

It is when it's used in the following manner: "corny-ass white people". If he just said "corny-ass people" it would be different.

That realy doesn't sound like something Mr. Peace and Love Santana would say. I'm kinda dissappointed in him. I have to agree that there are an abundance of corny-ass white people though and unfortunatly Ozzy has become one. Boy bands are a big example of the corny assness of white people.

Yeah, he had no problem using "corny-ass white people" like Rob Thomas, Dave Mathews, and Chad Kroeger to perform on his last 2 comeback albums. He also had no problem using these big mainstream MTV stars (along with Michelle Branch and others) to sell millions to the "ignorant Americans" he blasts, and to get major airplay on MTV and VH1. I'm not even a big fan of either network, but the hypocrisy is idiotic.

And I'm sorry, but the idea that today's teenagers would be hip to an 80+ year old jazz musician is just wishful thinking. Santana needs to understand that MTV pretty much caters to the 13-29 crowd now. Complaining about them not playing Elvin Jones is pretty much like complaining about Lifetime not airing "The Man Show".

Another problem I have with Santana's comment is that it seems to discredit other genres of music. How dare people have musical tastes that differ from his! They like heavy metal instead of jazz? Wow, they're so ignorant!

If Carlos is that "embarrassed to live in this country" I'm sure we could find enough people to get him a one-way ticket out of here.

Man! I hate these prima donna artists that complain about this country every chance they get, but have no problem when the $$ royalty checks come rolling in.

Santana ceased to be a relevant musican the day he paused, looked thoughtfully into the distance and said "You know, I'd really like to do a song with that Rob Thomas guy. Maybe that Michelle Branch, too. They really represent in today's musical world the same spirit of musical experimentation and multi-ethnic sound that I once personified."
