Hewlett's Daughter by Grandaddy - What's it about?

OK, Grandaddy have to be one of my favorite bands ever...

But what in the hell is "Hewlett's Daughter" about!?!?

I was listening to The Sophtware Slump again this morning and every time I hear this song, I tell myself to go online and find out the meaning behind it... but Google hasn't helped.

So it's from the perspective of a machine? That would fit.
Treating water and waste at night? OK...

I have heard it's referring to "Hewlett" of Hewlett-Packard, but I just can't for the life of me work it out. Is it even supposed to make sense? Their other songs have similar themes, (robots, technology, nature) but this one doesn't seem to click...

Hewlett's daughter,
Loved her father,
And I think she loved me too,
For a little while.
Hewlett's daughter,
I forgot her,
Now I'm treating water
And waste at night.
High above the wrecks
On ice shelves and glaciers.
I spy below the mess
And measure the pressure
Where sofas float on roads
And somebody stole your guns,
Well sir I'm the only one
To get back your stolen guns
I should have been your son.
High above the wrecks
On ice shelves and dressers.
With crash united sewn
On all of my dress shirts
They firefell the roads,
And somebody stole your guns,
Well sir I'm the only one
To get back your stolen guns
I should have been your son.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I realise this is an obscure question.

I was going to say sounds like a trip song to me. Anyone see the Grandaddy short documentary where they roll their van while they're filming inside? The guy just veered off the road and flipped it. Trippy band.

It just sounded like there could have been an interesting backstory behind it...

William R. Hewlett
(1913-2001)

Hewlett had a wide range of outside interests and hobbies, most of them based on his love for the outdoors. He was a part-time botanist and an accomplished mountain climber, skier and fisherman. He also maintained various ranching and cattle-raising operations with Packard in California and Idaho.

Mary Jaffe, Hewlett's daughter and Foundation board member, remembers her father saying that the graduates of the state engineering schools were the backbone of HP's success.

Love of outdoors, specifically California, background in engineering, has a daughter who works toward achieving harmony between technology and the environment through her foundation...?

Site drainage and stormwater control systems employ bio-swales, detention ponds, and filtration devices to limit disruption of natural water flows, increase on-site infiltration, and eliminate contaminants. These measures help protect the ecology of the site, the surrounding neighborhood, and San Francisco Bay.

Waste management efforts during the construction of the Hewlett Foundation headquarters resulted in nearly 70 percent of construction and demolition waste being diverted from landfill to recycling or salvaging operations. Now that the premises are occupied, convenient bins throughout the building facilitate recycling of paper, plastics, and other materials by staff and guests.

Treating waste and water?

It just seemed like there could have been something there.

Funny thing is, up until this point I thought he was pronouncing "treading" wrong (as in, "treading water").
