Hidalgo pronunciation
I work at a movie theatre and we've had Hidalgo since it opened.
I want to know from you guys, if you had any problems pronouncing the title of this movie. Because nearly every customer I've served has pronounced it wrong. Most move the "L" so it reads "Hildago". Some add an extra "L": "Hildalgo". And some outright butcher it: "Hildrialgo". One lady even spelled it out for me.
I don't want to insult anybody on this board who mispronounced it, but I just don't see how it's so hard. It sounds exactly as it reads: "HI" "DAL" "GO". It's not that hard, but most people don't even try to pronounce it correctly.
I'm sorry if this sounds petty, but a pet peeve of mine working in the box office is when people mispronounce the name of a movie or they add extra words or just tell me "the Tom Hanks movie."
So I ask again: Have any of you had any trouble pronouncing the name of "Hidalgo?"

I pronounce it in Spanish (meaning that I don't pronounce the "h" at all) but Spanish is my first language.
Those mispronunciations you mentioned are scary, though.

I also work at a movie theatre and have been baffled by all the people who just say "uh...you know, that horse movie"... Hidalgo is certainly not some obscure, impossible to pronounce title... I don't understand why it's causing so much confusion...

I've been ripping on my girlfriend for the last 3 weeks because she doesn't seem able to pronounce it properly. She consistantly says Hildago. I respond by telling her that it's not about an Italian horse and that most wops don't like being called dagos anymore.

Are you sure about that? I just saw the movie last night and it sounded like they were saying "HE" "DOLL" "GO" to me.

I was just seperating the letters in the name. I didn't mean that that was the pronunciation, I just wanted to show that it shouldn't be hard to pronounce it given the way it was spelled.

I've only seen in print so I've been reading it, with a soft i, "Hid-al-go". Although I will admit at first I read it with the misplaced L as "Hill-dag- o".
