Actress Won Oscar In Debut Role

POSTED: 7:52 a.m. EST March 18, 2004

Oscar-winning screen veteran Mercedes McCambridge has died.

A friend of the actress said McCambridge died of natural causes in San Diego on March 2. She was 87.

McCambridge won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in her film debut, "All the King's Men," in 1949. The political drama also earned Oscars for Best Picture and Best Actor for Broderick Crawford.

But it was a voice role that eventually became McCambridge's most famous credit: she was the actress who provided the voice for the demonically possessed Linda Blair character in "The Exorcist."

McCambridge had said her work in "The Exorcist" was the hardest she had ever done. Even though she was promised a prominent credit, the original version did not mention her.

However, the Screen Actors Guild intervened and forced her name to be in the credits.

McCambridge was born in Joliet, Ill., on March 17, 1918. She also appeared in such films as "Touch of Evil," "A Farewell To Arms," "Cimarron" and "The Concorde -- Airport '79."

She also earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for 1956's "Giant."

McCambridge's also appeared in several guest shots on television, which included roles in "Wagon Train," "Rawhide," "Bonanza," "Lost in Space," "Gunsmoke," "Charlie's Angels" and "Magnum, P.I."

McCambridge published an autobiography "The Quality of Mercy" in 1981.

Interesting about the Exorcist tie-in!

Interesting - I never really thought of who provided that voice before.

She was an excellent performer with a long, interesting career; sorry to see her go. Just saw her in Johnny Guitar a couple of weeks ago.

Oh man, I thought of a really inappropriate joke. I won't tell it, but savvy readers should be able to come up with it on their own. *snicker*

From: Chicago, IL,
She was better known in her day as one of the constant actors in Charlton E. Morse's I LOVE A MYSTERY, the best radio show of all time. She was in both runs, the LA run and the NY run.

She did tons of other radio as well. Too sad, Tony Randall is the last ILAM actor left.

That's my favorite of all her movies.... anyone who hasn't seen it should do themselves a favor and check it out.
