Columbia enters the overpriced 2-Disc SE market -UNDERWORLD: EXTENDED VERSION-

This sucks. The Good news, davisdvd is reporting that CTS is going to be releasing an Unrated Extended 2-Disc set of Underworld. The bad news, retail will be $34.95. Why in the hell do the FXXXXXG studios continue to do the shxt. This pisses me off more than anything these days. I do not have alot of expendable cash to spend on DVD nowadays and it's crap like this that makes it hard for true hardcore fans like myself to collect there favorite films i the best possible versions.

*^%# $%^ #&^$*&^* (edited for my own good)

Impossible to say for sure, but my gut feeling tells me the one word answer is "MONEY".

If it's a Columbia release, there is a good chance that it will get double, maybe even triple, dipped. This two disc set may not be the last one for Underworld, either. I'd put money on a Superbit release that has the same transfer as the original release.

These re-releases from Columbia really chap me b/c they generally come at a time when there's not even one warranted. SPR from Dreamworks is one thing b/c the film has been out for a few years already. New Line said up front that there would be multiple releases of the LotR films. Columbia, though, is known for re-releasing titles that are still pretty fresh and most of the time for no good reason. At least the Daredevil 1.5 release will coincide w/ a film it's somewhat related to. So, all in all, I say screw Columbia and Sony (don't they have a stake in this company?). I've never like Sony and that's one of the reasons I will never (hopefully) own a Playstation product or another Sony product.

Is this relevant? It's a Fox release.

Yeah, in a way...I meant to say that it was a Fox release. My point is that most other studios re-release movies for a purpose, generally cross promotion. Columbia, however, doesn't seem to do that. Maybe it's just me, though.

Didn't get my money the first time.

Sure as hell not going to support this lame double dipping a few months after release.

Columbia/Sony sucks!

It's not as if you won't be able to buy below SRP at any number of places. No big shakes.

I'm not sure I understand this logic. You're 'hardcore' and you want the 'best'... but you don't expect to pay any extra for it?

$28.95 retail for the current 1-disc edition. $34.95 for a 2-disc with a bunch of extra stuff. Seems like a consistent pricing structure.

Does it make you feel any better that the present R1 release of Underworld isn't even the best present version of the film on DVD, since it lacks the DTS track found on the 2-disc R2 version? So if you had the R1 you were bound to have upgraded anyway, right?

I think what he means is Sony's nasty habit of producing multiple copies without notice makes it difficult to buy anything because he is afraid of investing in something that will inevitability be replaced by a better version.

That's what I thought he meant at first... except that he thinks the release itself is "good news", only the price is "bad news". Makes no sense to me.

It's hardly Sony's fault that he doesn't "have alot of expendable cash to spend on DVD nowadays"

You damn kids today, with your 'online' and 'discounts' and movies that cost 15 bucks. Thank your lucky stars you didnt buy laserdiscs. 34 bucks for a disc would be a STEAL, and you'd be lucky if it included a trailer. Want the Super Delux version? Be prepared to spend 125 bucks - minimum.

i used to have to walk 1200 miles to Suncoast to buy $125 laserdiscs, 1500 miles home, up hill both ways. just because we used to pay that, doesnt mean we should be OK with 40$ DVDs now. and the response "its only MSRP" is silly, because of course the higher the MSRP, the higher the discounted price will be too, and after the first week, it will go back up higher. sometimes all the way to MSRP, or above, like Best Buy sometimes and Suncoast all the time.

Wow, the discussion went right over your head, didn't it?

Maybe you have the cash to buy a DVD and then turn around and buy the damned thing a couple months later when it's re-released with even more material.

Some of us aren't that fortunate.

You know, maybe I'm in the minority here, but that pricing seems pretty sensible. Same to say the disc will have a lot more on it, more features, better transfer better sound. 34.95 seems pretty reasonable, as it more than likely will see a normal price of $20-$25. I know we'd all rather pay $3 for this, but let's be real...I'm sure that some bean counter has figured that this is their best price point for profitability.

Nonetheless, I imagine this disc is coming along because of the success of the first Underworld DVD. While it's possible Sony had this in mind from the beginning, it's also quite possible they refused to greenlight the super special double disc version until they saw that the film was performing well on DVD. In which case..don't buy it if you don't want it, but now there's something more available to those who want it.
