The subject matter of this post is hybrid of movie talk and dvds, but I think it's better here because my focus is on the DVD aspect.

I'm looking for some good classic horror DVDs in the line of Night of the Living Dead and related. Frankly, it can be from ANY era (20s-present).

Looking for great quality transfer and extras.

I just got Night of the Living Dead (Millenium) and Halloween (Divimax).

I hardly think 50 movies on 12 dual-sided discs really qualify with my original post.

I will highly recommend Stuart Gordon's Dagon, at least until every horror fan in the world has seen it.

Day of the Dead SE, Dead and Buried, Re-Animator ME, Susperia LE, Howling SE, Dawn of the Dead SE (releases March 9), Hills Have Eyes SE, Dead Alive....

The list of Horror films treated well on DVD is astonishingly long.

Why *doesn't* it? Many of those movies are indeed classics, and (based on the Family movie pack) the transfers range from decent to very good. (Much better than anything Madacy ever put out!)

My post asked NOT for simply the best titles, but the best ***DVDs***. I'm not concerned with bang for the buck.

I'm sure you know about them already, but in April Universal is coming out with three sets of movies - Frankenstein, Dracula and Wolf Man. I'm definitely picking up all three sets of those.

Many of them are indeed classics, but I am hesitant because PD editions usually--not always, but often enough to cause the prudent person pause--do not have the best transfers. Also, many of them have better editions out there, and I love these enough to want the best edition out there. For instance, there is a Criterion edition of CARNIVAL OF SOULS that is fantastic: extra footage, audio commentary by the director and screenwriter, both theatrical and director's cuts, documentary on the film, not to mention a glorious transfer. Likewise WHITE ZOMBIE. When I first saw this on a PD VHS, I found it interesting despite a faded and grainy picture and tinny sound. Watching the restored version was a revelation, and now I regard this film as superior even to DRACULA as an example of Lugosi's art. I regard DVDs much as I do books, and as someone who not only enjoys the films but enjoys studying them, I not only want the best edition, but I feel that I need it. I may eventually get the set, but I have managed to avoid PD editions so far, and I might as well continue to do so. Best, Scott

Ah, another Lovecraft fan! If not, definitely check out the story DAGON was based upon, "The Shadow over Innsmouth."

I would also recommend the following:

1. CARNIVAL OF SOULS (Criterion)
2. BLACK SUNDAY (Mario Bava classic with Barbara Steele out from Image)
3. CASTLE OF BLOOD (Synapse offers uncensored international edition, also starring Barbara Steele)
4. WHITE ZOMBIE (Roan restoration)
5. THE OLD DARK HOUSE (Kino offers this James Whale classic with Karloff and Ernest Thesiger heading a great cast, with commentary by Gloria "Titanic" Stuart)
6. THE SHUNNED HOUSE--three Lovecraft stories adopted by an Italian director in English. There is an American release, but my copy is R2 so I don't have the details.
7. SUSPIRIA (Anchor Bay)
8. CURSE OF THE DEMON and NIGHT OF THE DEMON (Columbia offers both the cut US version and the uncut British version of this Jacques Tourneur classic version of M. R. James' "Casting the Runes"); and finally
9. THE WICKER MAN (love it or hate it, this remarkable film is a landmark, and one of the most interesting films in decades)

In my opinion these are some of the finest films out there, and are presented in the manner that most befits their qualities.

If you can handle PAL R2 discs, there are a couple of Spanish DVDS based on Ramsey Campbell's novels, SIN LOS NOMBRES and EL NOMBRE SEGUNDO, that are worhwhile, and have English audio tracks. There are also excellent R2 editions of such films as BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW and WITCHFINDER GENERAL that haven' made it over here yet, plus some Val Lewton films are available in France (in English) that haven't shown up over here yet.
