She deserves it as far as I'm concerned. Maybe there were other american women who deserved it before her, but I think she's a great woman to be the first.

LiT was my favorite film from last year, and I think that can be in part attributed to Ms. Copolla's direction. She knew how to set the tones of the film, and really show this relationship as something great, without having to become sexual. I really cared for these characters and their relationship. I never knew exactly where it was going because it was a story that constantly unfolded, and in the end, it left me with a feeling that no other film has given me.

So, yes I think she not only deserves the nomination but also the win.

Loved 'The Virgin Suicides' and loved 'Lost in Translation', very talented director. Kudos to her.

I just hope she wins on her own merit and not because the academy loves to honor family. Then again, if she does win, who's to know the real reason why?

Q: If she's the first "American woman director" nominated, then who was the first "woman director" ever nominated? (Presumably, non-American)

"In 1974, Europe's Lina Wertmuller became the first woman to earn a nomination (for "Seven Beauties") but lost out to John G. Avildsen, director of "Rocky." In 1993, New Zealander Jane Campion was nominated for "The Piano" but didn't win. The Oscar went to Steven Spielberg for "Schindler's List."

Good for her. I've liked her since Godfather III, which I thought she was just fine in, by the way.

If it's no big deal for Halle Barry to be the First Black Woman to win in the catagory she did....then why all the hooplah over Sophia being the first woman Director nominated?

Sophia is terrific as a director she really knows how to tell a story that stirs our emotions and I think she has a very promising career in front of her. I wish her best of luck and I am already anticipating her next cinematic experience...

I also say kudos to her. She made a fun, emotional movie and got some great performances out of all her actors, and really used the Japanese setting to her advantage. I don't think she's being recognized because she's FFC's daughter. In fact, I think that in order to get this nomination, she had to overcome the fact that she is the daughter of the man who made The Godfather films and Apocalypse Now.

All that being said, she still won't win. Not this year.

Well, she wasn't going to ever get the nod for Best Actress, so I'm glad she found her true talents.

Actually I hear that just as Halle Barry is only half black, Sofia Copolla is only half female. As for the other half....?

She doesn't talk about it much, but Hollywood insiders all know that Copolla has "man hands."

I'd like to go on record as saying that Sofia Copolla is hot and I would definately bang her...

Why is she half female? Does the other half account for the horrible use of that female in Lost in Translation? I would understand it was a male director exploiting a young girl. But for it to be a female director doing that was simply mind-boggling.
