Recommend a prog rock/metal band

I love prog and haven't bought any new cd's lately. I want to pick up a few but whenever I have an itch to buy one I can't think of any I wanted to try out. Any recommendations?

Love:
Dream Theater (most of their side work)
Ayreon (ambeon, star one)
Queensryche
Pain of Salvation
Symphony X
Nightwish
Stratovarius
King Crimson
Superior
Rush

Not so much a fan of:
Transatlantic
lighthearted 60's sounding stuff

I recently ordered Explorer's Club: Raising the Mammoth and Opeth: Damnation.

Lastly I am not a fan of cookie monster vocals(read Damnation wasn't like that).

I did a little scouring on the mp forums and came up with a few: Theocracy, Pig Farm on the Moon, Orphaned Land and Vandan Plas. More?

Sorry, Rush is a given. My bad. I'll add it to the list.

Meshuggah for some seriously heavy Opeth-esque math-metal. Thay have insane time-signature shifts.

Evergrey, I listened to one of their tunes off their website the other night. Sounded promising, I do want to check them out.

I totally forgot about the other thread. I even posted a couple of times in it. I don't know what I was thinking.

Anyway, there seems to be enough different suggestions to keep them seperate.

Keep 'em coming.

You already mentioned King Crimson and Queensryche and Rush [though I have no idea how to make a mixtape of them...I don't think I could listen to their albums out of order..], which are two of my favorites...maybe not as obscure...but what about Pink Floyd and Yes? I think they would have to be mentioned in a prog rock thread.

Never understood why people who can stand the castrated vocals of Dream Theater can't get into cookie monster vocals of Opeth. But if you really can't stand that stuff here's a list of the songs that have no growls.

A Fair Judgement
Credence
White Cluster
Face of Melinda
Harvest
Still Day Beneath The Sun
To Bid you Fairwell

As for some other prog bands I recommend Devin Townsend and Portal.

For me, it's the fact that I associate cookie monster vocals (or, as I call it, Mr. Backed-Up-Sink on vocals) with inane, repetitive death metal like Cannibal Corpse.

In fact, I place Mr. Backed-Up-Sink farther down the scale on the flush-o-meter than nu-metal. I really, really can't stand the stuff.

These guys can play...

Bozzio Levin Stevens
Attention Deficit
Glueleg
The Beyond (U.K.)
Beyond (Canada)
Thought Industry
Frank Zappa
Steve Vai
Kong
Tool

Too bad you don't dig "Cookie Monster" vocals, because Candiria smegging rock. Think thrash/jazz. I agree with Gourmet Artist, Dream Theater would be a much better band without James LaBrie singing. Technically, they're awesome. (John Myung rules.) LaBrie just sounds... wimpy.

You can't go wrong with "Rush" or "Queensryche", dream theatre i always thought of them as a one hit wonder "Pull Me Under"...

The band i'm thinking of is "Triumph" check them out...

I second Iron Maiden.

Also, check out Genesis when Peter Gabriel was still with them. They used to rock really hard before he left. Specifically, check out the albums Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound, and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.

Also, I would suggest Marillion, who sound amazingly like Gabriel-era Genesis, but even less acoustic instruments. But only get their stuff with their first singer, Fish. Their second singer sounds like some guy who tried out for Whitesnake but couldn't cut it. Their good albums are: Script For A Jester's Tear, Fugazi, Misplaced Childhood, and Clutching At Straws.

If you want some straight-ahead prog, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer have some good stuff.

I can't believe no one has said Vanden Plas yet. They're the ones that made me realize there was more to prog than JUST Dream Theater.

Also,

Blind Guardian
Angel Dust
Evergrey
Angra
Pagan's Mind
Gamma Ray
Iced Earth
Kamelot

Good to see another Cynic/Aghora fan. I really need to pick up Control Denied, huge Chuck Schuldiner fan here.

If you liked Cynic and Aghora you should definately check out Portal. It's pretty much comprised of the members of Cynic, but they decided to drop their death metal sound.

Nope you are not. I cannot stand the "high pitch" singing and the "cookie monster" growl singing.

Although James, at times, can have a nice singing voice. For the most part I dont dig it at all. Maybe thats why I havent *really* gotten into them, as their musicians are amazing.

Katatonia - Viva Emptiness (Opeth guitar tone but no death vox)
High on Fire - Surrounded by Thieves (straightforward metal)

You can always get Black Sabbath's first 6 albums.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have searched and found most of the official websites for most of these bands, bookmarked the ones I found . I might start an official thread for it. Yes? No?

Downloaded a cd worth of sample songs (full and partial), liked most of them, but the one that intrigued me most, Djam Karet, had the most original sound but none of the samples I d/led have vocals. Is it all instrumental?
