Yes. He was of the river folk, distant relatives of the Stoors, a seperated branch of the hobbit family. Tolkien suggests that the riverfolk were distant relatives of the Brandybuck clan of the Shire (Merry's family) which accounts for the Brandybuck affinity for the river and barges when most other Shirefolk avoid water at all costs.

Right, and I think Frodo even mentions this similarity in TTT.

BTW, I thought transformation was friggin creepy and well done.....

Here's another Smeagol/Gollum question: I can't remember from the book, but didn't Gollum have a relationship with Shelob? Didn't he occasionally find "victims" for her as part of some deal made when he discovered her while he was exploring caves?

He must have. I haven't read the book though He hints at it while he's talking to himself.

"Must bring them to her. She needs to eat she does..."

And then of course he then did lead Frodo into Shelob's cave, which btw was an awesome scene along with the rest of the film

Both Smeagol and his brother's feet were indeed huge and hairy.

Correct. After the events in The Hobbit, Gollum eventually leaves his lair in the Misty Mountains and is drawn toward Mordor as Sauron is using his powers to attract his evil minions to him. As a corrupted ringbearing, the pull on Gollum is great and he eventually works his way toward Mordor. He is captured and allowed to "escape" as Sauron wants to use him as a tool to seek the ring. After his escape he works his way to the pass of Cirith Ungol where he strikes a bargain with Shelob. He lures Orcs and other food into her lair for her to feed.

I think she could "speak" in the books, or at least understand speech
