operation ivy
temple of the dog

also, i saw a commercial on MTV2 for a band called something like "camdien & cabra" i can't remember. the song sounded great, but i forgot the name - forgot to write it down. anyone know who i am talking about. they sounded emo - but not too whiney.

I don't think this is a classic by any means, but The Exploding Hearts' Guitar Romantic was a very promising power pop album. Shame what happened.

the Left Wing Fascists, one of a very limited number of 'Humor Rock' bands.
And I don't know if it was a 'best' album, but it was a fun one.

I don't think they count because they put out another album (though nobody bought it), but I really liked Marcy Playground. I guess they are more of a one hit wonder.

Exactly. The Guardian had a great article on Lee Mavers yesterday, apparently stories of his insanity are highly over-speculative, he's more just disenchanted with the music industry.

I'd put Black Star up there (a collaboration of Talib Kweli and Mos Def), their album kicked ass.

Rites of Spring only had one real album and it kickstarted the whole emo scene (Ian MacKaye and Dischord Records have cornered the market on good one album bands...)

801, a collaboration between Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music, did probably the best art-rock live album ever (801 Live) and then split up. It includes my favorite Beatles cover ever, an amzing version of Tommorow Never Knows.

The Slits had one album and it kickstarted the riot-grrrrl thing (bleh...).

Slint's one album (Spiderlands) is incredibly influential, every band these days probably bought a copy at one point. If you haven't heard it, buy it, it's great. (Tweez was never really released, so they really only had one album...). Their previous name, Squirrel Bait made one insanely good record too.

Ciconne Youth (really just Sonic Youth and Mike Watt) is one of the more fun one-off albums ever recorded, it includes the most amazingly bizarre version of Madonna's "Into The Groove" ever made.

Mission of Burma, probably the seminal American post-punk band, only had one true album, "Vs." which is a must buy.

Modern Lovers (Johnathan Richman, Jerry Harrison who went to Talking Heads, the drummer who started the Cars and one Other Guy) made one album, and it's a stone cold classic. Amazing stuff beginning to end, like a happy Velvet Underground.

Rapeman, although it is more of a continuation of Big Black.

Probably won't get much backing on this one, but I still love the Len: You Can't Steal The Bum Rush CD. I kept seeing dates for a followup, but it kept getting delayed.

New Radicals would be another one I still really like.

In addition to what's already been said...

The Actual Tigers - I'm pretty sure they broke up. Their album Graveled and Green was one of my favorites of 2001.

Flake Music - Alright this probably doesn't count. They did only release one disc (When You Land Here, It's Time to Return - wonderful disc). After that, they changed their name to the Shins and got even better.

Milla Jovovich - she put out an album - the divine comedy. It's one of the best albums in my collection. It was put out just under the name "Milla"
