THE DARKNESS - Best Band in 10 Years

The Darkness "Permission to Land" CD came out here in the states a couple months ago and it hasn't left the car CD player. I haven't been this excited about a new band in 10 years... everything I remember about what I loved about rock n roll and metal, big hair, actual singing, fun videos, the rock star attitude, guitar solos, big hooks.

I gave up on rock radio when Grunge and Alternative took over, it just seemed so dull to me. I loved, and not ashamed to admit it, "hair metal" bands like Motley Crue, LA Guns, KISS, Judas Priest, Warrant, ACDC, Savatage, Ratt, ect. I listen to radio today and I don't get it at all, how can anyone enjoy the mind numbing boredom of Staind, Perfect Circle, Chevelle, Nickleback, Audioslave and the rest of the endless "mumble really slow my shoe about how depressing everything is" bands?

Anyone else out there love The Darkness like I do? I can't wait for them to tour the states. Rock radio has become so bland and dull, I really think it's only natural that a band like this would come along to shake things up. Are they the Anti-Nirvana of this decade, or just this years Andrew WK? Will it ever be cool to be a rock star again? Will real rock and metal ever come back to the mainstream? Am I hopelessly stuck in the 80's? Feel free to crap on my thread, I want to know what people think.

Best band in 10 years? You are entitled to your opinion, but I think you are way wrong. I think they are a good band, but not THAT good. I personally think Audioslave is better and does not deserve to be grouped into bands like Staind (sucks) and Nickelback (mondo suck).

They just played here in Baltimore a couple of weeks ago. They sound alright but I wouldn't go out and buy their CD.

Ok. I just heard some samples of them. Let me first say I'm glad that a band is finally rocking out again. What I will say second is... they need to seriously get a new singer. This falsetto stuff is pathetic.

I REALLY want to like this band. I like the idea and sound of "Get Your Hands Of My Woman"... BUT HE SINGS IT FALSETTO! AH!

Maybe I'll get into them some other time. Right now I'm looking for a band with this sound... but a sane singer.

meh, someone trying to capitalize on the retro 80's hair band sound. Flash in the pan, gone and forgotten by Feb 2004.

What about the "reverse Chipmunks" effect? You know, like when you speed UP the sound of a record to get the singer to sound like Alvin, whereas here you would slow it down to get him to sound like his nads weren't chopped off.

How can you put Audioslave and A Perfect Circle in the same sentence with the rest of the shit bands you mentioned? It seems like a rather presumptuous and ignorant statement seeing as you don't even bother listening to those bands.

Let me get this straight....your definition of "real rock & metal" is bands like Warrant & Ratt??

Funny how Audioslave & A Perfect Circle are mentioned In a thread titled "Best Band In 10 Years" because I would have no problems nominating these two bands as such.

I don't buy the idea that music sucks these days. Only people who get their music from commercial radio believe that. If you look just a little deeper, there a lot of unbelievably great stuff out there in all genres.

For example, if you like the Darkness, check out the Hellacopters from Sweden, they've been rocking out for years. All of their albums are great AC/DC-on-speed rock. They're huge in Scandinavia, unheard-of here.

i gave them a chance and the voice of the lead singer is really annoying.

i guess they're getting attention because they're different or 80's retro rock or something.

I can't judge the Darkness, having only heard their one song.

But I do believe that even though grunge turned out to be rather short-lived, we all owe it credit for at least killing glam/hair metal.

And if you like the Hellacopters, check out the Backyard Babies (Sweden), Wildhearts (from the UK, toured with the Darkness and coming to tour the US in March; DO NOT MISS THIS BAND!), Gluecifer (Norway), and Turbonegro (Norway)

As a rule, almost every band I've heard come out of Sweden kicks ass! (Mensen, "Demons", the Grinners, Nomads, Psychopunch, Deadbeats, the list goes on...)
