Sony Wega Vertical Compression Question

I was wondering what the point of this feature was on many of the new Wega sony televisions. Everytime we tried it on my friends television, it was noticably improving the resolution of the picture from a dvd (component input) BUT it was smooshing the letterboxed image.

Do you have to distort the image of your anamorphic dvds to use this feature? If so, what's the damn point? I'd rather have my favorite dvds look a little granier than look like they are being pancaked.

You need to go into the setup menu for the dvd player and select it to output "16:9" or "widescreen" (or something similar).

Steve's right. The vertical compression is mimicking the AR of a widescreen TV so your DVD player needs to be set to output to a widescreen or 16:9 AR display.

And remember it's only for anamorphic discs, you'll smoosh the non-anamorphics!
