help with dolby 5.1

I cannot get my reciever to play any movie in 5.1. Every movie is played in 3/2.1 or something like that even though it is formatted in 5.1. I have tried everything, playing with the reciever, playing with the dvd player. I am lost as to what I need to do. It is Sony reciever. I do not know if anyone can help? I tried a search and didn't find any info. I did not search too hard though. Thanks

How do you have your dvd player connected to your receiver? To get 5.1 audio, you must use either a coaxial or optical connection. Using the red and white RCA connections will not give you true 5.1 audio.

I just realized you have a Sony receiver. If it is indicating "3/2" sound, you are getting 5.1. The 3 applies to the front three speakers and the 2 refers to the two rear speakers. Are you not hearing sound out of all 5 speakers?

I get sound from all three speakers, but before the screen flashed 5.1, now it doesn't. Is this 5.1 and I am stupid?

All three speakers or all five? Which Sony receiver do you have?

Sorry about the typo. There are really five speakers. The reciever is just the cheap ddw750.

I just looked up the user manul for your system. You should be ok if you check for the following on your receiver display:

1. "DOLBY DIGITAL [3/2]" or "dts [3/2]"
2. An indicator for Dolby Digital (the dolby logo followed by "DIGITAL") or the "dts" indicator
3. Five squares with "L","C","R","LS","RS"

As Nike said, with Sony receivers "3/2.1" indicates you are getting 5.1 sound: Three speakers in the front, two in the back, plus the LFE channel.

Onkyo receivers, similarly, list 5.1 as 3/2.1. 3 fronts, 2 surrounds, one sub.
