Hitachi LCD HDTV - I need advice on the TV and the overpriced stand

Hey all,

I've got my choices down to two Hitachi HDTVs now. The first is the 50" LCD and the second is the 51" RPTV. I'm going to buy at Circuit City because I've got one of those 10% off deals they send out now and again.

50" LCD - 50V500 - $2999.95
51" RPTV - 51S500 - $2199.95

First off, is there anything I should know about either model? The product reviews at CC both look very good, and from what I can tell, Hitachi is the way to go. I'm really leaning toward the LCD because it's so much lighter and because my wife really wants something that allows us to store the componants underneath, which the RPTV don't. The picture also looked slightly better in the store.

That leads me to my next question. The stand, which is what my wife really wants, is $600, which is just insane in my mind, especially since most of the reviews say it's not a good stand and the glass on the shelves is so weak that it doesn't even hold two componants. Does anyone have a recommendation of a good alternative stand that I could buy that would look good with this set? I hate to pay $600 for any stand, much less one of inferior quality.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There are a lot of happy owners of the Hitachi 50" LCD over at www.avsforum.com . Have you looked at the Panasonic 50" LCD? Some feel it looks as good as the Hitachi but it is less expensive and has better inputs.

You don't really need the 10% off coupon since price is negotiable even at CC. Just ask to talk to the sales manager. 10% off is a good place to start but you should be able to get a lower price. An extended warranty is a good idea too and will help you get a lower price.

I bet they would take $100 of the stand for you right off the bat. Nice alternative stands can be bought for $100-300. There are a number of posts at avsforum.com regarding stands.

Good luck and have fun!

I just got the 51S500 and couldn't be happier.

The picture quality on the 51s500 is always going to be better than any current LCD less than 4 grand.

The HDTVs with LCD,DLP, LCOS, etc are inferiour to CRT RPTV if you are spending less than 4 grand.

Anyway, your choice depends on what you are going to do with the TV.
