I will never use Fire Wire.

And I can find the 165 for about $75 cheaper on the internet.

So, would go with the 165 if the 160 does not have any advantages over the 160.

It looks like the 160 can receive a Direct TV signal, but I am not sure the 165 can receive a Direct TV signal. I guess that would be the big selling point. I am not using Direct TV now, but I might in the future.

Here is Samsung's comparison chart for the 160-165-351.

Samsung STB Comparison

Consider the 351 if you only want OTA HDTV. You can get it for $350/shipped online.

I have the SIR-T165. Basically the 160 is for people who use direct TV, and the 165 is for people who only use OTA HDTV. The 165 also has firewire & the 160 does not. Firewire is necessary if you want to record HDTV broadcasts with a digital VCR. The 165 also has a built-in scaler to convert 480i/480p signals into 720p or 1080i, whereas the 160 does not. Basically the 165 is better in every way, EXCEPT if you use direct TV.
