Just got a new 51" Sony widescreen HDTV, but...

...I'm concerned over the image quality of what I thought was a good reference disc to use to check quality. I have a Sony progressive scan DVD player connected with component cables, the player is switched to progressive scan, yet when I turned on the Star Wars Episdoe II DVD, it looked grainy and not very clean.

The SD and HD off-air signals look good, so it didn't appear to be the TV. The delivery guys hooked everything up (I had the cables laid out for them), and it looks like everything is correct.

Am I missing something?

BTW - I'm loving the set and can't wait to watch the Bucs play on MNF in digital (is it in HD)?

Your DVD player matters. What kind do you have?

Have you run a setup disk like Avia? If not, definitely do that ASAP and it should make a huge difference.
It did for me.

Geez...who has time to check 40 different forums. Starting a topic shouldn't be a major web-browsing event.

I thought of that after I posted...didn't check to see if there was one. Other is the next best place for this.

My player is a Sony DVP-NS715P. Damn thing says "high resoltuion output" all over it...DTS, progressive scan, etc.

I'm psyched about watching the Bucs in HD!

Ditch the player. It's a known dog with poor output and plenty of glitches. You might be able to improve the PQ enough to tame it though. The Sony RPTVs have many different combos of picture settings that will add to a poor image. Finding the right combo and tweaks to perform is beyond my knowledge since I don't own that brand. Head over to the Hometheaterspot.com or AVS.com to read the Sony forums for more info unless someone here can provede the info you need.

I'm curious as to why you bought the Sony TV and the Sony player. Was it brand loyalty? IMO, and many other's I've read in the last few year's I've been reading about HT, Sony makes a good if not great direct view TV but falls way short on the RPTV front. Their DVD players have the chroma bug and don't deliver high marks in the PQ catagory either. It seems to me like people buy their brand based on past glories.
