question about vega anamorphic squeze

I have a sony 36fs13 Wega tv that has this option.
So to basically see an anamorphic dvd with greater detail i need to set my tv set to 16x9 mode and and Dvd player to the same.
The picture i get still has the black bars, but is of higher quality... am i correct so far?

what if i watch a non-anamorphic dvd in 16x9 mode?.. i am not really seeing much difference.

Yes.

You wouldn't turn on the squeeze on the TV. You should see a quality difference. At least you'll see scan lines where you wouldn't using the squeeze.

Leave the DVD player in 16:9 mode, don't do the squeeze on the TV. It's called anamorphic squeeze, and should only be done with anamorphic DVD's.

just bought a used 2 year old Sony Wega KV-27FS12 and i'm fustrated with having to program the anamorphic squeeze function each time i turn the TV off and on or flip thru the video input channels. is there a way to lock in this function and just turn the squeeze off when viewing non-amamorphic letterboxed or 4x3 DVD's (assuming you should turn it off)?

On a side note the geometry of my set is noticably off on the lower half of the screen. lines just aren't straight and this interfers with the bottom letterboxed edge of any widescreen picture. going into the graphic interface of my dvd player menu i noticed that vertical lines bording the menu on the sides too where crooked. perhaps it's the dvd player, which i tried on the tv's different video inputs? what can be done too straighten lines short of having this used Wega professionally serviced?

Yeah, there actually is a way to make the squeeze the defualt, but you have to go into the service menu. Basically you go into service mode, turn on the squeeze then save settings. Follow this link for info and other tweaks:

Geometry problems can also be solved in the service menu. You're going to want to have a calibration disc like Avia or Video Essentials so you can use a test pattern to check the display as you tweak it. Again, see the link above.
