dvd newbie

Just got my first dvd player and am really pleased with the picture and sound. There is one thing tho that is a bit of a worry and that is a noise that seems to come from the disk tray when it's running. It's a sort of whirring sound like if you say "brrrrrrrrr" but without the b. It plays cds ok with no noise at all and most dvds are ok but every now and then one runs with the noise...sometimes not loud, sometimes medium loud and sometimes loud enough to hear over a quiet sound track. When it is loud I can feel quite a vibration with my hand on the top of the case. I would appreciate any comments on this. My player is a Lenoxx that's what you'd call a budget machine. Thanks for any light on this.....pollyanna

Unfamiliar with that brand. I can tell you I've had several Toshibas and have not had any problem with a whirring noise. If you can hear it over a soundtrack I'd either return it or spring a few extra bucks for one that doesn't make noise.

Definitely return it and consider throwing in a few extra bucks for a better player as Jim said. Go with a Toshiba, Panasonic, or Sony. While you'll pay a little more, it's well worth it.

Sounds to me like your tray might be misaligned or something so that the disc isn't sitting perfectly level.

Is that happens with all discs? Some badly pressed disc might produce weird sound when it's being played.

It could be because it's a budget DVD player. More expensive ones (and many budget ones) generally have a very quiet whirring that's only audible if you're standing right next to it. It could also be caused by a DVD player that is not completely level and the disc is experiencing rub on 1 part of the tray.

you can get a perfectly fine inexpensive brandname player for under $100.

it would be well worth it to pitch in a few bucks for a better unit.

Yep, I've seen Toshibas for around $50-$60.....get a brand name one.
