First what you have is an HD ready set.

Second yes it will help to have an ISF cal done on any TV since no mass produced TV will have everything set perfect which is what an ISF cal does.

Now if you feel adventurous and handy you can do yourself the majority of what a pro cal entails. If you haven't already visited www.HomeTheaterSPot.com go on over and start reading. There is a ton of useful info on how to improve the PQ of Mits TVs over there. If you feel like doing some tweaking yourself become a paid member which lets you into the Mits Tweaks area that is for paid members only. In there are the steps that the pro calibrators use and all of them can be done by you without anything more than a copy of Avia and some time. I know because I've done it myself.

The only thing in a cal that needs a pro to really get right is greyscale since special equipment is needed for that. A typical full blown cal can run from $500 to $1000 but if you do it yourself and just hire them to do the greyscale you can spend about $250.

Also be sure to wait at least a month or so (or 200 hours) of viewing before you do a calibration or it will be a waste of money. The CRT's need to break in and will tend to drift it's settings the first 200 hours or so.

Get AVIA: Guide to the home theater to do some calibration yourself until you arrange for a ISF calibration.

As long as the overscan is in the 4-5% range you are fine. this is the normal overscan amount for most TV's.

Like Frank says if your overscan is equal on all 4 sides at about 4 to 5% that's what you're aiming for. If it's not then it can be fixed by you in the service menu of the the Mits. It's not hard to do but there are some things you need to be careful of in there. This is another tweak that's covered in the paid area over at HometheaterSpot.com.

Fixing it will also improve your stretch modes if you find that one side is more than the other. Say your left side measures 10% and the right is at 6%. You could live with the 6% but if you bring in that 10% to match it then that's 4% less stretching your picture is doing. If the top and bottom are off in the same way then making the amount equal and smaller will improve the tightness of the scan lines and make for a sharper image. It's well worth having fixed IMO.

If you decide to go for a pro calibration this is usually covered in the whole package but some times the overscan for 480p and 1080i are both off different amounts and a separate charge is needed for the second scan rate. If you decide to do it youself and follow the tweaks listed at the Spot they have a phone number for a printer who makes clear overlay grids to match the Mits grid to so it can be perfect for both scan rates.

One tip, if you decide to go into the service menu -

Write down all the settings before you do anything else.

Also remember that going into the service menu might void any warranty you have.

Hey guys, I have a Sony KV-36hs20 tv. I had it calibrated, but i think i did it too soon. Is there a site that has a complete list of codes in the service menu of my tv, which details what each one is? Heres my problem. I have a progressive scan dvd player, connected through component cables. Now when i turn the progressive OFF on the player the picture is detailed and clear, but you get the jaggies and other anomolies because it is not progressive. Now when i set the dvd player to progressive the picture is softer and not jaggie but soft/blurry. Its as if I turned the sharpness all the way down. I dont like that, and in progressive scan i cant adjust it any higher. Also the tv is in progressive mode i think, cause i cant change it to interlaced, the selection is faded in the menu and i cant access it. Only when the dvd player is set to progressive off. I'd like to improve the sharpness when in progressive mode. How can i do that through the service menu? which code do i look for? any help would be appreciated
