I read in the latest rolling stone magazine (the one with the 100 "greatest" guitar players) and in there, they mention that the movie would have around a 3 and a half hour run time. I thought Jackson and new line said 3 hours was the limit (or is this just some rumor by the idiots at rolling stone.)

Could very well be - the first two are getting one-week theatrical re-releases in their extended editions - perhaps as training sessions for the grand finale!

There's no definite running time yet. The final cut of The Two Towers wasn't finished until early October last year, and I'd expect the same to be true of ROTK this year.

If it is longer than 3 hours, I hope it still bodes well for an eventual extended dvd edition. An intermission would be great. But your guess is as good (but not better) than mine, Corvin's or Jackskeleton's

Three and a half is definitely a long time to have to sit without an intermission. However, if they make it as entrhalling as the TT was, it'll definitely speed by without as much as a glance at the watch. I just sat through the EE of FOTR, and I admit that I did sigh a couple of times (but, then again, that could have been because of the change of discs halfway through the movie). Just my $0.02 in the matter.

Maybe they'll give away free vivarins with every ticket.

When I was talking to my Brother last week about the added footage on the upcoming LOTR TT EE dvd... I was [half Jokingly] like just wait until "Return of the King" comes out, I'll be 3 and a half hours in the theater and then the EE edition will be like 4hours+... anyway they might want to put enough of footage to end it with a Bang...

It's now "commercially" feasible, but I still think PJ and New Line will try to keep it at around 3 hours, maybe just a bit more--but I hope they don't sacrifice anything really vital to do so. This needs to be a masterpiece.

Peter Jackson was told to keep the first two under 3 hours -- he was not told so this time, although he shares final cut with some bigwig at New Line, so it's not his final decision.

Also I figure that Mr. Jackson has proved he has a feel for the material so whatever he thinks is what the final cut should be.

I plan on watching the re-releases back to back with ROTK so I'm already set for a numb ass.

Our local cinema is having a marathon and will be showing all 3 back to back. Fellowship and Two Towers will be the extended releases and then they are going to show Return of the King at Midnight opening night. I don't know if I could sit there for 10 hours!!

All I've heard is that PJ was contractually obligated to turn in films under 3 hours for FORT and TTT, thus the 179-minute running time for both of them. From what I've read New Line has lifted this restriction for ROTK so PJ is free to do what he likes, within reason. I don't believe that New Line would allow a 4 hour movie to be put out in theatres because it's just not commercially viable, but I think they want the movie to be the best it can possibly be, especially for the Oscars.

I am expecting a movie that is about 3 1/2 hours, and I couldn't be happier. They still have to cover the material from the end of the TTT book as well as the great War of the Ring. This raises the question that if the movie is indeed over 3 hours, what is left for the EE version?

As gcribbs said, they know that the first two made a little under two billion dollars worldwide, I'm sure they're not worried about the audience for ROTK. If the early rumors are tue, this could be the best of the three, so $350 million or more is a reasonable goal.

At that level of success, a longer running time isn't an issue.

I disagree, when it comes to LOTR more=better.

From what I've read, Peter Jackson has said ROTK will be as long as it needs to be. ROTK is relatively short compared to the other books, especially with the scouring of the shire removed. Sure, he has some material from the Two Towers left to cover, but it'll all balance out in the end. I'm betting he'll bring it in around 3 hours and 15 minutes for the theatrical version, with a 3:45 extended version.
