free digital cable box.
I recently got a free deigital cable box from a friend that was moving out of town. If i order digital cable, can i use this box in addition to the one they provide? They usually charge rent fee of 5-7 dollars for each additional box.
I guess i am wandering if i need to register the box with comcast or if i can just plug it in and get all the digital chanels?

It won't work
I'm almost positive that the boxes are addressable and won't work unless turned on by a signal from Comcast to activate the box. This I believe is one of the prime reasonc Comcast and others have gone to Digital is to illiminate hot boxes. In my neighborhood there is no advantage to digital, quality is the same as analog and contrary to the lies Comcast sprouts special equipment IS needed for each TV to receive a digital signal (not a piggybacked analog for basic channels). Agreed with "jlemoine"... I had a Comcast tech out at my place today for something else and I asked him the exact question...no dice. Now, he could just be telling me that because that's what they want us to believe but unfortunately, I have no way of checking that out!
I basically just rent the HD box to get HD on the main TV...the rest of the TVs in the house just get direct cabel, not digital because I don't want to spend $5.25/TV for a digital box.
I have to say though, after 3 years of having DirecTV, I do like Comcast, epecially on the HDTV with the digital and HD broadcasts! Also, being able to view different channels on each of the TVs without having to have a reciever each TV is nice! It is a bit more expensive but as a former DirecTV customer, I get $25 off each month for the next 16 months!

Now right now i have the free cable that was never tunred off from the previous owners (shhhhh) but its only A chanells (which is basically just local chanels and aa bunch of spanish canels and such(about 20 chanels) How much doyou guys pay for directTV programming. This way can keep the existing cable for local chanels and then sighn up for DirectTV for the main set. are there any deals going on right now for DirectTV programing?
