I am looking to buy a new television with a budget around $3000. I would love a plasma/HDTV, but I am not sure if my funds can stretch that far. I have also been looking at the Sony KF-42WE610 that is coming out later this month:

Most people seem to like Mitsubishi or Pioneer....for $3,000 you can get a pretty nice HDTV.

If you don't need speakers or a tuner on the television, then you can get a 42" Panasonic plasma (TH-42PWD6UY) for under 3K at many reputable online places. Costco has an Akai plasma (Samsung rebadge) that has speakers and a tuner for $3K. There are other possibilities too out there. These are all EDTVs that will downscale an HDTV signal to 852x480. That is the perfect resolution for DVDs. Most people think HD looks excellent on ED plasmas, but some think HD plasmas look noticeably better with an HD signal.

At $3000, I think you are also in the range of the LCD and DLP RPTVs.

The big question is "what will you be watching on this tv?" What percentage of viewing time will be hdtv, dvds and sdtv?
