DVD Player progressive scan producing strange output - Help identify the problem

Hi,

I just bought the SD-3900 at Best Buys recently. This is my first attempt in using progressive scan option. So, I went out and bought a component cables. I have a Sony KV-32FV1 model tv - it has a component jack (red, blue, green) on the back. I hooked up the cables...and then I decided to go and program the progressive scan option on the dvd player.

After I turned it on, the picture became split up in half of the screen as if a big black line goes down in the middle of the screen. What's wrong? Please help. Is it something wrong w/ the cables? tv? dvd player? If i turned the progressive screen option off, then it works normal video.

thanks,

Here is a picture of it:

Does that TV support a progressive signal? I can't seem to find the tv listed anywhere.. I have a feeling that's your problem though.. but it should still look good with the component cables and progressive off..

Thanks for the reply. I don't know if it support progressive or not..but i just notice the red/blue/green rca jack in the back. I think I bought the TV in 98-99. Is that my problem? If that's the case, then I was hoping to see the difference. I was flipping back and forth between component vs. composite cables...and I can't tell the difference. Darn...spent 27 dollars on those cables.

Are you sure they're aren't more numbers in that model number?

Double-check to be sure your red cable is going to red, green to green, blue to blue.

Sony KV-32FV1

Here is the model number. I corrected in my initial thread. On the back of the tv, it's November 1998 model.

Yes, I made sure I connected red-red, blue-blue, green-green. I bought the Acoustic Research component cables for $27 on ebay.

I think the component cables work fine because it only happens when i enable the "progressive" option on the dvd player.

Is that option true for all DVD Player? You have to enable it on the dvd player?

I attempted to call Toshiba support, but they're closed for the weekend. Then again, i'm not sure how helpful they'll be.

The more i read the dvd manual...it stated that "the television is a high-definition or "digital ready" tv, you may take advantage of the DVD Players's progressive scan output for the highest videos resolution possible."

I know my tv is not HD-TV....but i'm not sure what it meant by "Digital Ready".

=========

Ahh...found this site that provides a list of progressive scan capability

Darn! I guess I need to buy a new TV then.

2 things are happening:

1. your tv can not show a progressive signal.
2. your tv has progressive built in already, thus cannot 'double' it, so turn it off on the DVD player.

We have recently noticed #2 happening with a lot of new tvs at work...kinda stupid if ya ask me, since the progressive scan built into the tv's is usually way worse that that of the good dvd players.

I am 99.999% sure that your TV is NOT progressive scan capable. Meaning that you can NOT use the progressive option on your DVD player. This is not a big deal though. I have the same exact model as yours, except in the 27" flavor, so here's a few tips:

1. Use the component cable input on the TV (which you're doing)
2. Make sure your DVD player is set to 16:9 viewing format under the setup menu (just make sure it is 16:9 and NOT 4:3)
3. When you go to the DVD input on your TV, turn on the Widescreen Enhanced option under your menu of the TV. The image you will get off that is dead sexy. Don't worry, it was worth buying the component cables, you should definetly notice a difference after you put the TV in Widescreen Enhanced mode.

Good luck!

You guys rock! Question for Steebo777:

Where can I find this option on the TV? I checked last night on my remote by pressing the "menu"...but I was only playing around with the video..and i didn't see a widescreen option. Can you show me the step by step on your tv? thanks,

Is this the reason why I was playing Breakfast Club Dvd widescreen ....and it showed up as FULL screen? I was like "what the....I don't want full screen."

Engel,

Steebo is correct your tv will not do progressive. It is just now coming to the point in the market where you can buy an EDTV for under a grand.

Now for the 16:9 feature your going to have to go into the service menu to activate it.Do a search for Sony service menu you should find what your looking for.
