John Singleton gets a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame...
...why?
What's the criteria for getting a star? Or does it really not matter anymore...?

John Singleton Gets Star on Walk of Fame
LOS ANGELES -- John Singleton has turned Hollywood Boulevard into his 'hood.
The "Boyz N the Hood" director accepted a star Tuesday on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to celebrate the 12th anniversary of the acclaimed gangland drama about three friends growing up in South Central Los Angeles.
Among the celebrities attending the ceremony outside the historic Chinese Theatre were Laurence Fishburne, who played the tough father in "Boyz N the Hood," and actor-model Tyrese, who starred in Singleton's 2001 drama "Baby Boy."
"Everything John said he would do he has done," Fishburne said. "He has a never-say-die attitude."
The 35-year-old director wrote the script for "Boyz N the Hood" as part of his work as a film student at the University of Southern California.
The film helped launch the acting careers of its young stars, Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube and Morris Chestnut, and earned Singleton Academy Award nominations in 1992 for best director and best screenplay.
"I am tripping out," Singleton said Tuesday. "In 1977, when I was 9 years old, I had a date with my dad to go the Chinese Theatre to see 'Star Wars.' This is where I learned to appreciate cinema. I want to thank my dad for that."
Singleton's other credits include "Poetic Justice," "Shaft," "Higher Learning" and "2 Fast 2 Furious." An anniversary edition of "Boyz N the Hood" debuts on DVD Tuesday.

Has it ever mattered. You know the celebrities have to actually pay to get a star of the walk of fame. It's really just an ego thing.

The only way that it has ever mattered is that it seems like the people who get them still think it's pretty cool (and I kind of joy checking them out on the rare occasion I'm in Hollywood).

True.
IIRC, the first several hundred stars were just given so they could make the "walk".
After that...This link may help. It seems to me I 've heard pretty much the same thing over the years.

There are very few directors that would even deserve to have a star on the Walk Of Fame. Hitchcock is one, Spielberg is another, and Kubrick too. Next thing you know we'll be seeing guys like Paul W.S. Anderson getting a star.

That sounds about right.
I really need to be a filmmaker in hollywood already.
So I too can make a silly sequel to a silly movie about fast cars that makes some money and ensures a star on the walk of fame for me.

I think we're being a bit too harsh on Singleton - he's no worse than most directors out there today.
Plus, the man boasted happily that he had 3,000 DVDs. And that was when Jaws came out. He's one of us!

This thread is hilarious. Everyone's ripping on a man who has made some quality films just because they happened not to make that much noise at the box office (or is it simply because you didn't like the films?) And claiming he got the star because he's black...gimme a break.
Singleton is a pillar to the African American community because of his work, and his earlier films are important ones. BOYZ is obvious, but ROSEWOOD is a great look at a horrible time in U.S. history. Although flawed, HIGHER LEARNING also has some important things to say about youth and the college environment.
As for his newer works like SHAFT and 2 FAST, Singleton has stated that he wants to do some fun movies. He doesn't want (or need) to be serious all the time or try to make a statement. It's his life. If he wants to make an action movie, then so be it. I commend him for doing what he wants.
And in case you missed it, here's the DVDtalk interview with the director: http://www.dvdtalk.com/johnsingletoninterview.html

You guys have entirely missed RyoHazuki7's joke. He said that if Spike Lee didn't have a star, it was only because he was black. The point being that a guy like Spike is quick to shout out "Racism!" when he doesn't get what he wants. Whether it's true or not is debatable, but you both misunderstood the joke.

Boyz in the Hood(1991): Great jumpstart to the Indy film world that exploded through the mid 90's. Well realized film that made Ice Cube appear to be a good actor. Most actors were never as good in subsequent roles, great start.
Poetic Justice(1993): Pure garbage but chock it up to the sophmore slump, most directors do endure this after a great opening film.
Higher Learning(1995): To call it flawed is to be very generous. To call it awful is not to exagerate. Characters the quality of an afterschool special.
Rosewood(1997): Never seen it, so I'll refuse comment. Most critics I respect consider it middle of the road, but I can offer no opinion.
Shaft(2000): Guilty pleasure of mine, I do enjoy this picture. But not very well recieved, critically or at the box office(and given that it's a popcorn picture, the box office is the popular vote)
Baby Boy(2001): Did nothing for me, but actually commanded respectable box office.
2 Fast 2 Furious(2003): Singleton does McG. Not reflective of his gifts.
So it's not like Singleton has had some library of critical or box office successes. And I think his best film is clearly his first one.

Boyz N the Hood is a classic and Higher Learning has its own merits, but Rosewood is a great film that is often over-looked by people. This movie should be a must-see for anyone who hasn't scene it. Singleton does not get the credit he deserves for that one. He isn't just a one trick-pony, he's got more than just Boyz up his sleeve - and for crying out loud he is still only 35 years old, for a director in Hollywood that's pretty damn young.

In my mind, a star is given to a performer/creator/whatever, after s/he has amassed a significant body of work.
IMO seven flicks does not a significant body of work make.
