Does anyone else like thrillers fm the 70s?

I just recently got to watch "Marathon Man" and "Sorcerer" for the 1st time and was mesmerized by how "gritty" and sometimes political these thrillers back fm the 70s were.

I'm really beginning to love the way these movies were made as compared to most of the thriller movies nowadays that seem to cater to attention-deficit disorder people who prefer the MTV-style fast editing.

I also just bought "The French Connection" and was thinking of renting "Serpico." I find that the films of these era may be a little bit slow in unraveling the plot and endings can be a little bit ambiguous with no clear resolution.

Can anyone recommend more types of these films based on their "rewatchability" factor?

Well, it's one thing to enjoy, but the 70's weren't any better at the "B" faire than today, infact I think they were worse. I was watching just this last week, "Shaft", "Assault on Precinct 13" and "Last House on the Left". These were some of the worst climaxes ever to a film, dull, poorly shot, lacking suspense and energy. The MTV style brings more baggage than grace, but all in all, it has a lot going for it.

I can highly recommend The Conversation, Three Days of the Condor, and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.

These are the exact two I immediately thought of, as well. Other good ones include The Seven-Ups, The Laughing Policeman or is it Policemen?, Charley Varrick, Freebie and the Bean (more of a comedy), Dirty Harry flicks, and of course several Charles Bronson movies.

Honk!

You should try to catch A Decade Under The Influence, playing on the Independent Film Channel (IFC). It's a three part documentary about the '70s movie scene, featuring tons of great interviews with directors, writers and actors as well as plenty of clips from classic '70s movies. It really makes you realize how much more freedom artists had in those days, before the dawning of the Summer Blockbuster.

My top 3 picks as well.

As also mentioned, several Bronson flicks (The Mechanic, Telefon, The Stone Killer and Mr. Majestyk, in particular), The Super Cops (little-known gritty cop thriller), The Poseidon Adventure, The Driver, The Anderson Tapes and not to mention all the 70s car chase movies (and there are tons of 'em)

My favorite decade for sure.

One of my faves is Klute. Just picked it up on dvd recently and I can't get enough of it. Donald Sutherland and Jane Fonda are perfect in their roles, plus the cinematography by Gordon Willis is superb.

I really like Dog Day Afternoon in addition to some of the other movies already mentioned. Marathon Man is great. You can also watch the Boys from Brazil if you want another crazy nazi movie. It isn't as good as MM but it is enjoyable in its own way.
