Question for those who have seen FREDDY V JASON - No Spoilers
I'm asking in a separate thread because i haven't seen the movie yet and have stayed away from all other threads
I am a huge Elm st fan, have seen all films many times. I have seen a couple of Friday the 13th films once but can't remember much
Am i going to enjoy Freddy v Jason less if i don't know the Friday the 13th history and lore ?
Which parts of Friday the 13th would do the trick setting the background for Freddy v Jason ? I don't really want to go through the whole lot but will do so if everyone here thinks it worthwhile
cheers guys

I didn't know much about either series, besides the basic pop culture knowledge, and I still enjoyed FvJ for what it was.

Honestly, the movie is more steeped in 'Nightmare on Elm Street' knowledge, than it is 'Friday the 13th'. All you need to know is Jason was drowned at Camp Crystal Lake and his mom was the original killer in 'Friday the 13th' and you're set. And you really don't need to know that goin' in to the film, because it does take time to explain that part to the audience.

But I'd say that if you wanted to go back and watch any of the FRIDAY THE 13TH's to get some backstory, you should watch either:
FRIDAY THE 13TH - which tells you the whole story of Jason and his mother
or
FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER - which gives a nice 5 minute recap of the backstory plus the first three movies in a pre-credits sequence

The way this film was made you really don't have to have seen any of the other parts to get what is happening. Everything is explained, and this film does not stick to the continuity of either series at all.
In other words, it was made to please both audiences...
Those who are fans of either series,
and the new blood.

The movie was designed to be standalone. However, the more you know the better off you are and the more you can enjoy the film. What you know about Jason already is probably enough. But I suggest probably watch the first few films of FT13 and Jason Goes to Hell. I haven't watched all of the movies yet either but I think at least 1,2,9 would be considered the essentials. A better and more knowledgeable FT13 fan should offer better advise on the essential films.

Actually - the less you've seen of Ft13, the better. Anything after pt. 4 in Friday (except for 7) was complete nonsense and they typically didn't really try to stay true to the rest of the series. All you need to know they tell you more or less. Oh - then there's Friday pt. 9 (I think) where they first hint towards a vs. battle.

They hint towards it by having Freddy's arm / glove come up and grab Jason's mask.
Trivia : The arm and hand of "Freddy" in 'Jason Goes to Hell' was Kane Hodder's arm - the famous Jason actor. He also played Jason in that movie.

.Oh and the person that agreed with him, how about this you go and sit through the animated Sinbad movie and Gigli and then get back to us about how bad Freddy vs. Jason was.

I dont know after seeing this crap movie I would give Gigli a shot,I bet you the acting is better.
Honestly im not crapping on this thread but the acting in FvJ was the worst ive seen in years, worth seeing?if your a big fan of the 2 series you will be disapointed but if your going in there not knowing much about the 2 series you might think its ok.

Hey Im not one to defend the "acting" in this movie, but come on there have been much worse movies than this one in the last two (2) years.
Hell I had never seen a Nightmare on Elm St and only three (3) of the 13th Series and I knew going in the acting was going to be horrible. People do not go to these movies to see Laurence Oliver, they go to see how high the body count is.

Once again, I think the problem is some of you went in expecting some great philsophical film or something. Instead of a dark comedy / action with two of the greater horror icons....
Good acting? It's a horror film!

Yea, Honestly Freddy VS. Jason is more of a Nightmare on Elm St. flick with Jason thrown into the mix.

T&A really don't add anything, for me at least. I was kind of amused by the nudity at the begining. To the best of my recollection, it's been awhile since I've seen nudity in a film. What's up with that?
I was really worried when I heard about Ronny Yu directing. But it turned out to be up his alley; unlike Formula 51.
I've alway found the backstory in the Nightmare on Elm Street films really cool. I'm always watching 1, 2, 3, and New Nighmare. Very, very entertaining films!
But Jason does absolutly nothing for me. He used to really scare me when I was younger. But now, it just seems ridiculous. I don't even really find it fun to watch Friday the 13th movies anymore. I caught Jason X one night when I was closing the movie theater where I work. I couldn't believe how horribley amusing it was. It was just silly, in the sense of NoES 4, 5, and 6.
I'd say that the *only* fact you *need* to know about either franchise is that Jason's Mom controlled him. I think that was the only thing that wasn't really self-contained in FvJ. Knowing that Heather pulled Freddy into the real world in the original film would be nice too. Otherwise, you'd probably be like 'where the hell did that come from[?]".
