Anyone remember Ron Howard's "Cotton Candy"?

"Cotton Candy" is an early Ron Howard directed TV movie about rival high school rock bands (The "good" band led by Charles Martin Smith vs. the "evil" band that only seems to know "I Shot the Sheriff"). I really liked this cheesy movie, but I don't believe it's ever been released to the public on any format, and you never even see it on TV anymore. Rumor has it Howard hates it, so he bought the rights and plans to NEVER release it. Don't know if this is true or not. Just curious, does anyone remember it or have any info on a possible release ever?

I remember seeing this on TV twenty years ago. I recall it being rather sweet and heartwarming.
