I love Sommersby. Good story, very sad ending.

A friend and I have always wanted to see this, though only to figure out how Jodie Foster could mistake some other man for her husband. Can anyone explain this to me? I mean, the odds of finding a man that looks EXACTLY like her husband are so slim that the story would seem laughable if this is indeed the case. Even if it's been some years, there's no way someone would make that mistake...anyways, I may be way off on this, but it's what we remember seeing from the trailers.

Check out the original, "The Return of Martin Guerre" and forget this remake.

Absolutely - the original makes you believe the premise, but the remake simply asks you to accept it.

Totally agree with the above two posts. Martin Guerre takes place in the middle ages and certainly in that spritual time, people could be fooled; but by the Civil War, there were actually photographs available and it seems impossible to believe the story in that time frame.

My all time favorite Will & Grace line (at the wedding of Jack and Rosario) "I haven't seen a kiss that awkward since Jody Foster and Richard Gere in Somersby".
It's funny on at least two or three different levels.

It's a decent chick flick, definately worth a rental.

Good movie. Supposedly Jack had been away at war several years if I remember correctly. The movie goes to great lengths - maybe too much - to explain how the mistaken identity could happen and does not ask you to merely accept it.

Not too bad. Enjoying it the couple of time I watched it on TV. Haven't got the chance to watch the original though it seems pretty interesting to me.

I seem to recall thinking it was fairly dreadful, but it has been awhile.

I always got the idea that she never did mistake him for her husband...she was always clear that he was someone else. But unlike her husband, she grew to love him and was happy to play along with the charade.

I haven't seen the French original (yet), but Sommersby was rather poor in my opinion. I seem to recall the plot becoming pretty incoherent at the end (but that's not the main reason I disliked the film).

Of course, the quintessential "Richard Gere farm movie" is Malick's Days of Heaven.

Great reason. I wish I came up with that golden observation - I'd be in my parent's basement, looking up at my Apocalypse Now poster, and it would hit me: I know war! War truly is hell!

Then, I would wipe the Cheeto dust off of my fingers onto my skin-tight Lady Death shirt, chug down some diet coke, and begin posting.

And it wouldn't sound cliche, either.

However, like a previous poster, I have seen all but the beginning of the movie, so I still have no idea how the world could handle two Gere's. Talk about HOT, HOT, HOT!
