Meg White : Yeah or Nay

I am a fan of the White Stripes & ive even posted a thread praising the new record but i do have somewhat a problem.
Its just that im a Jack White fan & i really think the Stripes would benifit if Jack teamed up with another drummer.
I know this will never happen but i just think she is a less than average drummer & a Guitarist as good as Jack should be with equal talent.
Many may say she is essential to the band but im going to have to say (This is just opinion, please do not attack me) That she sounds like unexperianced drummer with tired uncreative beats.

I agree that Meg White doesn't seem to have much range, or atleast doesn't show it if she does. I've heard that before. But I think part of the charm of the White Stripes is that simple drumming--it's part of the whole raw energy that makes the music so great.

Yes! You hit the nail on the head. Plus, she's a Boo-Ya hottie.

I love you Meg.

Whether she is a good drummer or not I don't know, I've never heard her play anything besides white stripes songs. The drum tracks for their songs however can't get much simpler. Any decent high school drummer could play their music. I think this is who they are though. Their music doesn't need to be complicated to sound good. FWIW her drum set only consists of a bass, snare, high hat, floor tom and two cymbals last time i saw it.

From the rolling stone review (they gave it 5 out of 5 stars)
"Meg excels in those surroundings. Her drumming is often a simple blend of tom-tom beats and cymbal splashes. But she swings -- rough yet hard, underlining Jack's guitars and vocals with the boom of the late John Bonham and the limber time of a juke-joint thumper."

She's a terrible, terrible drummer who works in the context of the White Stripes. It's pretty clear that all the talent lies in Jack so it's just a matter of if/when he decides to exercise his potential to grow as a musician.

Meg works for me. She keeps the rhythm. Never been a fan of "flashy" drummers ie Keith Moon so she's right up my alley.

Shes gotten a little better. But at times it seems she struggles just to keep the time. Its even more evident on Elephant than WBC.

I'll have to agree, especially with the second part. But Meg really does add a certain attitude, a cuteness, that undeniably contributes to their overall appeal.

Didn't I read somewhere that he taught her to play drums just so he could have a drummer?

So....where are the pics? We're not talking about if she's any good at drumming, are we? Er....maybe I'm in the wrong forum... ;-)

Can't stand her. I've worked with many drummers, good and bad. She's one of the worst I've heard on a major label release. Ruins the experience for me.

I don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to critiquing music, but I do know that I really like the way the white stripes sound. I don't really care if she's technically a bad drummer, she does a near perfect job for this type of band, IMO.

From an interview in this week's Onion:

Onion: Do you think there's a certain amount of sexism behind the criticism of Meg's drumming?

Jack White: I don't know. It can be taken in a couple of ways. The way I look at it is, I love Meg's innocence and her childishness. And whether that's a feminine characteristic that's disregarded or degraded or whatever... Or maybe it's not even a feminine characteristic at all. Maybe I could be that way just as easily. But I love that, and I think that's the most important part of the band. Almost everything we do is based around her. It wouldn't be The White Stripes without her. If it was some guy in the band, it wouldn't work. I just love that. I don't know if it's sexist. Charlie Watts and Ringo, those guys got ribbed all the time because they weren't doing drum fills every two seconds. It's kind of stupid, especially once you get involved and realize how great Ringo and Charlie were and still are. I think they're amazing drummers.
