Makes sense, since most college students would be considered "low income" and they play a lot of games.

Here are a couple quotes from the story I found interesting:
But the study found relatively little difference among low-income and high-income teenagers when it came to what is known as the "hard-core" category, or those who buy more than six games per year.
Buying more than six games a year makes you a "hardcore" gamer?
While action and adventure games were most popular with boys, nearly half the girls surveyed favored "parlor" games.
WTF is a "parlor" game?

Yeah, I disagree with that too. I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer by any stretch of the imagination, and I average around a game a month. I'd define "hardcore" more in terms of hours spent than number of games owned.

I have to dispute this. I am DEFINITELY NOT a hardcore gamer. I have bought 6 games in the past year. Final Fantasy X, Madden, MVP Baseball, NBA live, & the Mark of Kri b/c it was 20 bucks & now Windwaker. And I have only played Mark of Kri twice. If you buy 1 game a month that is absolutely a harcore gamer. I cannot imagine buying that much & then having the time to play all those games to the point that you need to buy a new game every sinlge month. That is definitely hardcore.

I would say that I AM a hardcore gamer, and between console, PC, and GBA, I go through about 3-4 games a month depending on the time, and games.

Yep, that sounds pretty much like me. EBGames.com's preowned games section allows me to indulge myself on a budget.

My love of games means I'm hardcore; using DVDTalk means I can be a cheapskate, too

Yeah I buy more than 6 games a year usually (not much more though) and I'm far from being a hardcore gamer.

I also agree with ctyner, hours played is more important that games owned. I mean I'd consider someone that played everquest or the other MMORPGs 40+ hours a week for a year or two pretty damn hardcore, and some of them probably bought few, if any other games.

I probably play about 5 hours or so a week due to time constraints, but even when I had more free time the past few years I probably only played 10 or 15 hours a week on average.

Well, I'm sure there are at least a few adults still living at home who don't have a job and play videogames a LOT. I have a relative like that.

It might also be due to the fact that Videogames help you escape, and if you're really low income it might help the kids not have to deal with reality.

I'm actually surprised by the number of low income familes I know of how have both cable and dsl...

One day, I asked on Ghost Recon Live whether anyone knew if wine from the El Nino years were any good.

One guy retorted: "Hey, do we sound educated?"

I have to agree with the everquest analogy, I probably spent about 80 or so days of playing time in a year and during that year I didn't buy that many other video games, probably enough to put me in their hardcore category but its all about time.

It's times like this that I realize I've bought over 35 games in the past year... haven't had time to play all of them, but the deals were quite good. I got both a PS2 and Cube in the past year, and was playing catch up with all of the games I missed. On the day I got my Cube, I also got 5 games, and was considering picking up RE to make it 6... hardcore in a day!

If "hardcore" is buying 6 games a year, then what is it called(aside from being a complete loser and needing a life) when I have purchased more than 100 games(mostly NES/SNES/Genesis) and 5 systems in the last 6 months alone? Not only that, I game practically every single day(while still going to college full-time and working 30+ hours a week).

Wow - who would've thought that people who spend more time playing video games than working would end up making less money than people who spend more time working than playing video games. Crazy stuff.

I have bought over ten games this month (each at about 10 because of this and other forums), but I don't think I am a hardcore gamer. It is more of a hobby to me, love it, but squeeze it in around work. Have a full time job with two occasional side jobs. Going to school full time, again to get second degree, this fall while working is really going to squeeze my time. Oh, I am getting married in about two months so that may take a little extra time, but I doubt it as she loves games and plays when I am not on the systems.

Lucky for actually having some decent games to play.

I recently did some inspections on a low income apartment complex for a bank. I have done these several times in the past. I am always amazed at the video game setups these guys have. They don't have the newest/latest greatest, but they are loaded with games. One guy had everything including the SNES Superscope

I think they play a lot more than the middle income crowd etc. On occasion I think about how much time I would have to play vids if I went on welfare, etc. I recently realized that I work out so that I can live long enough to play a bunch of games I haven't had time for.

YES... I was jealous of them
