Oh My God, They Renewed 'South Park'

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Stan, Kyle, Cartman, Kenny, Chef, Timmy, Jimmy, Butters, Tweak, Mr. Garrison and the rest of the increasingly large "South Park" universe will remain together at least through 2005. The show's creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone renewed their contract with Comedy Central for at least two more years in a deal that also includes an option for 2006
"South Park," which debuted on Aug. 13, 1997, began its seventh season on March 19. While the past two seasons have consisted of 17 episodes each, the new deal will reduce that number to 15. The episodes will run in a the spring and fall in seven and eight episode bursts.
"We want to make sure we keep our summers open," says Parker. "We want to be able to do movies. Or goof around and sit on our ass. Maybe finally start our microbrewery. We just turned in the script for our top-secret movie with Scott Rudin. So we may need some time to work on that down the road. That's what summer is for."
Comedy Central is just happy to have that corner of their schedule set for the near future. While "South Park" may never again approach the epic ratings of its early days, it is still consistently the cable network's top-rated series.
"They're happy. We're happy. It was a win-win," says Comedy Central President and CEO Larry Divney. "They like producing the show, and we love the way they produce it. And even though we own it outright top to bottom, the show could never be done without them. They also share on the backend and merchandising, particularly the home video part, so everybody does well."
The 100th episode of "South Park" will air on April 9 and if the show is picked up for the 2006 option year, it would become the longest-running primetime comedy series in basic cable history.
