what I want to see in a (future) wireless controller

I want to see a wireless controller with a charging base. Similar to how cordless phones can be charged when not in use.

It'd be easy enough to implement. Put in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (or even NiMH) into a well-designed controller, and have a charging base available when the controller is not in use. Not only would you save money by not having to buy batteries, but you wouldn't have to worry about batteries running out in the middle of a game. And since battery life wouldn't be much of an issue, you could easily have full rumble capability in the controller.

Why doesn't Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, or any third party companies make a good wireless controller that can do this? It's such a simple idea...

That would be nice. I could care less about rumble though, I usually turn it off on my PS2. It's just an annoying gimmick IMO.

I'd still have to worry about batteries running out as I'm sure I'd still forget to keep it charged.

It would be nice to not have to buy batteries though. Still even that's not a huge issue. I don't play all that much and my batteries tend to last a pretty long time. I got my Wavebird in June and I'm only on my 3rd set of batteries.

Makesure the control is smaller too (like SNES control)

Because some things just make too much sense.

Good idea!

I'd also like an auto-on/auto-off feature. Because I'm too dang lazy to flip that switch every time.

Also it would be cool if you could turn the console on remotely with it.

madcatz had one out for the ps2, i didn't like though cause if the battery ran out which it did often (might have been a bum battery) you had to recharge, you couldn't just change the batteries.

I only change the Wave Bird batteries about every two months so I've got no problem with the battery life. I can honestly live without the rumble with most games, but it seems pretty important in Zelda. A rumble feature would be nice for that game.

I think they should've had a switch on the back of the Wavebird for rumble on/off, with a warning that using it will eat batteris like mad. Therefore you can use it on games where it's important (Zelda's Stone of Agony comes to mind)

Yup, that would be a huge problem with non-changable batteries. Unless you could plug it into an outlet while you were playing, but that takes away the whole point.

Well, deftone's story gave me the idea that if they build in support for wireless controllers in the next generation, they could design it so that the game automatically pauses when the console loses the signal from the controller.

Logitech's X-box controller turns itself off. Very nice feature. Not that I ever forget to turn off my Wavebird, but still nice not to worry about it.

Charging station sounds cool, but it would suck if the battery cuts out in the middle of a game. But solution to that is just keep it on the charger when not in use. How many people have 20 hour gaming marathons anyway?

What I'd like to see: keep the wireless controller as close to the design of the "regular" design as possible. I also prefer the use of "standard" AA batteries, fairly cheap to stock up on, and allows the use of the rechargable NiCad batteries.

charging base would be nice but if the ps2 made a wireless controller half as good as the gc's wavebird i'd be the first in line to buy em.

the wavebird is one of the best game accessories i have ever used for a console.

i would rather have the controller wireless, but chargeable by attaching the X foot cord to the console. no base station. if you leave the controller plugged into the cord while system off it'll charge it. and obviously it'll charge while plugged in during gaming. so if batteries run low while gaming, plug it in and play through cord like current consoles.

#1 issue is cost, but i think this is good move for msft to make to try and differentiate themselves next generation.

#2 issue is size, but that depends on how long they want it last with or without rumble. but in general, i don't think size will be any bigger (with msft controller that is) hahahaha, j/k. look at gba sp.

Yeah, as someone said before, the Madcatz one (at least for the PS2) has a charging base. It also turns off automatically if you don't press any buttons for a while (which is really annoying in Xenosaga, with the long cutscenes). It's nowhere near as reliable as the Wavebird, though, and it is annoying when it loses charge.

At first, I thought a remote off button for the console could be pretty cool, until I realized the frustration that might cause if you accidentally hit it in the middle of playing a game...

while on the subject of wireless controllers, I hope they become standard. just have an access point built into the console. your friends could just bring over their controllers and the system would detect them when you turn on the machine, much like bluetooth. imagine the impact on the gaming world that would create. multiplayer would evolve into something new.
