Alias, you get a big 15-20 min opening, a 2 min commercial, then 5 min segments, and another 2 min commercial repeat.

Dateline (i know, it's a news show but what are ya gonna do).

There must be 20 minutes of program, and 40 of commercials.

MTV commercial breaks are the longest ever, that's for sure. They have to be at least 6 or 7 minutes each.

Agree on MTV - it seems that way. When I watch Real World, which I record on my Replay-TV), I have to do 4-minute jumps for the 2 commercial breaks. Therefore, a 22 minute episode.

However, aren't all 30-minute network shows 22 minutes long? I believe so. The difference comes down to the number of commercial breaks. Network sitcoms have 3 commercial breaks while the MTV shows have 2.

American Idol

Not only do you get regular commercials, but you get bombarded with Coke, Ford and AT&T Wireless promos during the show.

Ryan got so tired of saying "after the break", he's now getting the contestants to say it for him.

I counted 17 commericals at one time.

Actually
I really notice them when I catch a movie on TV. The unnatural pauses and long breaks really throw off the movie for me when I am used to watching a DVD. What really gets me is when they use a commercial for an edit. They break and them come back 10 minutes through the story so they can edit for content or time, really irks me how they just slip that by...

I would say Survivor is right up there with American Idol in terms of commericals and "cross-promotion" tie-ins. Instead of reporters, we have products embedded into the shows. I think AI has toned down their tie-ins and made them less annoying then last year's Ford Focus lame-a$$ skits.
But in Survivor, you have contestants competing for Beer or doritos or whatever as luxury items.
The Superbowl has lots of commericals but I actually look forwards to then sometimes more than the actual game.
