The current lineup
Linoone
Lairon
Grovyle
Castform (very nice addition to my party)
Pelipper
Hariyama
I'm about to get the 7th badge and have been flying through with this party which surprises me since it's still not very balanced.

There aren't many 2 v 2 battles, but there should've been more! I always like Dragon Warrior Monsters better because the battles were 3 v 3 and you had to apply thought and strategy to your battles not just, fight heal fight.

There are tons of in-game trainers to fight. So YES you can play by yourself.

I just fought him today... my level 26 mudkip's ground attack did some damage to him, but he destroyed my graveler...

I've now completely revised my party. I've got all the badges and getting ready for the elite four.
Relicanth (Water/Rock) - took forever to catch. Very strong.
Linoone - I love this guy, takes some of the HM's I need and it's very strong in normal attacks.
Aggron - (Steel) incredible defence against normal attacks.
Groundon (Fire) - legendary Pokemon on game cover. It wa actually easy to catch
Raichu (Electric) bred from 2 Pikachu's and raised from Pichu on up. Water has no chance against it's Thunderbolt.
Pelipper (Water/Flying) to use Fly and air attacks.
I keep Castform, Grovyle nearby to switch if needed. The last badge was the easiest so far, I didn't have a single Pokemon knocked out.

Where do I find Castform and Religate?? What do they evolve from?
Current team -
Grovle - aka Raptor - lvl 21
Makushita - aka Majiin Buu - lvl 21
Aron - aka Steelix - lvl 21
I'm only keeping pokemon in my lineup that will be good in the long run (does MAkushita ever become stronger? he's pretty weak now)

You get Castform at the weather center, it does not evolve.
Relicanth also does not evolve, it is Water/Rock found when you dive, but it doesn't show up often. It also burned through my dive and ultra balls. For me, it was much harder than the "legendary" Pokemon.
Makushita will become a Hariyama which has nice attack and good fighting moves. I have one around that comes into the party when I need him.

I'm 60 hours in and only 6 badges.Scored a 103 in my Pokedex so far though!

The record trading is awesome. It passes information between games from games you've done it with before. I traded records with my girlfriend, and a week later with my best friend and he was playing around and got to a TV and they were talking about my girlfriend's pokemon. Pretty slick.

How do you get the Coin Purse?
It says see the girl next door but noone is the hosues around the agme place have a coin purse.
Then I went back to littleroot to see that girl
but she was not there.
Also where am I suposed to go after riding on the boat to the second town that you can ride to.
I rode to the first island then to the 2nd one and am now at the gym leader and he has about level 20 pokemon that I cannot beat.
Was there other stuff to do?

Did you remember to pick up a Harbor Mail in Slateport? If you didn't, you can either skip this completely or go back, get one, and then come back. Anyway, take your Harbor Mail into the first building you see upon entering the city (it should be the one just to the right of the Game Corner; there's a man standing next to it). Talk to the girl in there, and she will happily trade your Harbor Mail for the Coin Case, which will allow you to play the games in the Game Corner.
What to do?
level up your pokemon so that you can beat the gym leader.
Then you'll get your next mission.
