I dunno. Probably about 6000 complete albums of score promos, concerts, and other rare stuff that can't be bought in stores; another 900 personal albums that I ripped myself for space conservation purposes; and then a few hundred gigs of loose stragglers (never really counted them before; never saw a reason to).
Most are at 192, so physical storage space is certainly an issue. When the price becomes more disposable, I'll probably redistribute them to DVD-R.
Oh, and are they legal? Probably not. If I could find what I wanted in stores, I'd buy it, but labels would rather release some compilation trash with stupid hip-hop "inspired by" songs than actual scores. I'd much rather have a nice CD with a cool cover and maybe some interesting liner notes, but that option is rarely available, so until then ...

Wow...das Monkey beats the crap out of me....I've got about 40 CDRs full, most at 160-192, and currently 1.5 GB on my HD [I had to reformat about two weeks ago, ended up deleting 6 GB.] 95% of them are digitized copies of stuff I've got on cassette or vinyl, mostly 80's metal, since cassettes take up too much room and I don't have a record player anymore, and the remainder is true underground or alternative; like dM says, the stuff Sam Goody or EMI never heard of.

I digitized my CD collection before I went to college almost 4 years ago. I stopped burning CDs once the collection surpassed 5 CDRs. Now I burn live sets and full albums to CD, and leave the 6000 or so individual files on a HD designated for nothing but media files.

There are currently 3200 mp3s on my computer. About one-third of them are tracks I ripped. The rest I downloaded, but 90% of those were downloaded between 1997 and 2000.
All I download now is drum and bass tunes. These songs almost never make it onto CD so this is the only way, short of becoming a DJ and buying the vinyl, to get them.

I typically don't rip any mp3's from my cd's. I mean, if I already have it on cd, why would I intentionally butcher the quality to listen to a lousy mp3??? Hell no, crank up the cd! Or the vinyl for that matter...the mp3 just sounds pathetic on my setup.

I've got all of my CDs ripped on my music server (that lives in my basement). It also houses all of my Pearl Jam bootlegs (pretty much every live show). Here's the tally:
D drive: 7629 files
F drive: 10828 files
Spread out over 200GB of hard drive storage (RAIDed for safety's sake).

Not sure what you mean by that question, but quick math:
200 gigs = 209715200 bytes ... by 18457 files = 11362 bytes per file or about 11 megs per file. Assuming cluster size is negligible, that's more than enough room even at 256.
