Johnny Cash -- Recommendations

Just got back from a trip down to Memphis, Tennessee. Stopped by Sun Studios and remembered why I love The Man in Black so much.

So heres the deal. I own the American Recordings albums and a handful of hits compilations. I would like to pick up some of Cash's classic albums.

Any recommendations? What is your favorite Cash album?

Thanks,

BBP

Not a studio album, but I love Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson's VH1 Storytellers cd. Listening to the two men collaborate is awesome, and they seem to be having a great time.

Pick up the box set "Love, God, Murder." I really love this set, each album is 'themed' with Cash's great obsessions. It may not be all-encompassing but you could hardly ask for a better career sampler/survey IMHO. I'll also second the San Quentin album, it's a real trip.

Manf of Johnny's early records are out of print. When you go to the record shop's all you see most of the times is the American records,a couple of live albums & about 50 diffrent Greatest hits collections with the same songs on them like Folsom Prison,I walk the Line, Hey Portor,Ect,Ect,
The only way to go if you really want to really explore the Man in Blacks library of music is Germany's Bear Family Box Set's.
These are the most Awesome box sets & they compile just about everything Johnny's done from the Early Sun stuff to the late 70's.There are 4 Box Sets total & are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !

The 3 disk Essential Johnny Cash (there's a 2 disk one at Costco and places like that--I don't have it, so I don't know if it's good or not, but the 3 disk one is excellent).

I really enjoy the Love God Murder ones too, especially (surprisingly to me) the God one.

I think his prison albums are the best. Johnny Cash is a great singer.

Well, Orange Blossom Special comes to mind, the prison albums...Christ, get the box set that has been mentioned. That is a good start. The SUN SESSION era is great, more rockabilly. All Cash is good Cash, I say.

You can try COLLECTORSCHOICEMUSIC.COM or http://www.bear-family.de/index_english.htm.
These place should have them.
I believe the run between $80 - $100.
But its the only way to get these songs (on cd ) unless you want to hit record shows & buy old albums for big $$$

I was about to start the same thread.

I've heard good things about his latest. Best Buy (and other stores?) has a DVD with it.

Thanks all.

Picked up the the prison albums, the love-god-murder set & the last american recordings album i needed. All are wonderful.

German Bear Box Sets are too pricey for me right now. Maybe someday.

Still want to pick up some Sun Studios work.

Thanks,

BBP

Don't forget "Ride That Train," one of the best American albums ever.
