as for the history of ska, reggae, dancehall:

reggae is typically thought of to have come before ska because when people think of ska they think of the Specials or the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, both of whom did not come in the first wave of ska.

ska originated in Jamaica, becoming the first popular musical style to put emphasis on the upbeat. two or so years after its creation, there was a blisteringly hot summer in Jamaica (more so than normal), so the bands slowed down their music*. they shifted the focus from the horns to the vocals, thereby creating "Rocksteady". the vocals (and multi-part harmonies) were the focus of Rocksteady. *or, at least, so the story goes.

this music, in turn, picked up some speed (not enough to make it become ska again) and an increased emphasis was put on the upbeat (making it more pronounced than it was w/ Rocksteady).. it is commonly believed that the sound of the guitars hitting the upbeat made the sound "reg-gae" (or, alternatively, it was a pigeon-english translation of "raga"). hence, "Reggae" was born.

all of this happened within the span of five years in the mid-'60's.

this part i'm a little more vague about: dancehall came about in the '80's, when american popular music (being highly electronic at the time) fused w/ reggae

as for the specials and the bosstones: the specials were part of what is known as 2-Tone ska which arose in England when the music of Jamaican immigrants (ska) fused w/ the English punk movement, creating a 2-Tone (black and white) ska movement. this is where the black and white checkered pattern emerged as being stereotypically associated with ska. this all took place in the mid/late-'70's and early '80's

the Bosstones (and other third wave ska bands) are the result of the English 2-Tone movement impacting American music. this movement started in the mid/late '80's and grew to a mad fury by 1997, when popular radio picked up on it. of course, popular radio picked up on some of the more annoying ska bands and therefore, many people have a mistaken impression of what ska is - confining it to sounding similar or just like Reel Big Fish, No Doubt, or the Bosstones**. in reality, the characteristics of third wave ska are so hard to pin down because there is no standard form - you can have laid-back proto-rocksteady ska (i.e. Hepcat or the Slackers), poppy boppy ska (Save Ferris, Reel Big Fish, etc), jazz-ska (the Articles, New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble), skacore (Mighty Mighty Bosstones)... the list of genre-mixing in the third wave could go on forever. **that is not to say that these bands are annoying, these are just the most obvious examples of whom the radio flouted (and, IMO, they were some of the more ear-achingly boppy ska bands to be widespread)

Stone and Jeff were in Green River with Mark Arm. Mark went and made mudhoney. Stone and Jeff went to Mother Love Bone. Andrew Wood died and Love Bone disappeared. Stone and Jeff then hooked up with Eddie and made pearl jam. The drummers in these bands was always sort of a satellite and of little consequence.

Stone and Jeff later teamed up with Chris Cornell and did the one-time Temple of the Dog as a tribute to Andrew Wood.
