Lucas: "I'm making nine movies from one book"
In an interview posted at FOXNews.com, George once again goes back to a nine movie format for Star Wars.
In speaking about a friendship struck with Peter Jackson while they were both filming in Australia, Lucas said:
Of course he also says that after Ep III he'll concentrate on making smaller films, so who knows what he's actually thinking:
I dunno, at one time I would have had a total shibbey at the thought of three more SW films, but after the last two....
In speaking about a friendship struck with Peter Jackson while they were both filming in Australia, Lucas said:
"Essentially, Peter is making three three-hour movies out of one book," Lucas said. "And I'm making nine two-hour movies from one book." Of course, Lucas wrote his own book, but the mythology harkens back to Lord of the Rings. "We discuss it a lot because they are similar in nature," said Lucas.
"I'm going to go from complete success to complete failure," he told me, without a wink or a smile. On the contrary, Lucas said he anticipates utter rejection from his fans once Star Wars concludes. "I'm going to make a bunch of movies like THX," he said, referring to his earliest effort. "And if people don't like it, too bad. There will be no Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan for me," he said of pal Steven Spielberg's "serious" movies."There won't be any big dramas or Oscars."

I just find it interesting that Lucas and Jackson are on friendly terms, yet their fans are anything but. Just about every LOTR thread on this forum is crapped by somebody with "Jedi" or "Darth" in their username saying "sw rox, lotr sux lol," and vice versa for the Star Wars threds.

it was done that way because the publishers did not want to print out a massive book and find out it was unsuccessful and have many unbought copies leading to no $$$.
for the people who have read the books, though, you know it was meant to be split into 6 books, not 3.what the story behind not 6?

Does anyone really believe anything George Lucas says at this point?
George says a lot of things.
Maybe he really is planning to stop at six movies. Maybe he's secretly planning to do a third trilogy. All we can really do is just wait and see.

GL has the money and influence to do whatever he wants. That's extremely rare in the entertainment business and virtually unknown in mainstream Hollywood. He can change his mind daily, and make conflicting statements, because the only person he has to report to is himself. I'm sure there are times when he thinks he would like to continue the story for another trilogy, and times when he can't wait to be done with it forever.
People expect way too much from GL.

Forget about it. The magazine misquoted him, which is not surprising. Lucas has never wavered on how many Star Wars films he plans to do since before he started the prequel trilogy. There won't be a third trilogy. I'd bet on it. Star Wars is over and done with forever in 2005. Lucas has said he's 60 and doesn't want to be making Star Wars films when he's 75. I remember him saying he has some other projects he wants to do, smaller projects like THX1138 and American Graffiti.

I so wish he hadnt made the last two and upcoming one. He should have quit while he was ahead.
The first three were so fun and exciting and the last two have been such a mess and laughable at best.
I saw a headline in USA today the other day saying Lord of the Rings is the Star Wars of this Decade. I have to agree.
Lucas should have never waited so long to produce the prequels because then we would have actually been able to see all 9 which he says hes too old to complete now.

First off, I like the Star Wars movies. I find them to be good popcorn entertainment but nothing more. I really don't understand the hold and influence that they have over sooo many people. Now, I am prepared to get flamed for this upcoming rant but Lucas has been bugging me for a while, ever since I saw the ep 2 doc Puppers to Pixels and realized how much of a jerk he is. This to me is just another statement that makes Lucas even more like the pompous, arrogant jerk that many people percieve him, including myself, to be. Let me explain:
To me Lucas is the ultimate spin-doctor. For example, in the hype leading up to Episode 1 you never heard Lucas say anything about how he intended episode 1 to be a children's movie. All of a sudden, episode 1 starts to get trashed by critics and fans alike, and for good reason. The common complaints of course were the kid that played Anakin and Jar Jar. Lucas all of a sudden changes his tune and reacts to all the critisism by saying Star Wars ep 1 was intended to be a children's movie! By his saying this he obviously takes the heat off himself, because he can do no wrong you see, and turns it into a reason why the movie was trashed. He then goes on, and he does this all the time, to insult the very fans that made him the most overhyped, super-rich, no talent hack in Hollywood by saying that the fans didn't like the movie, or Return of the Jedi, because they grew up and the children's material no longer appeases them...but he doesn't care about that.
Example #2: Episode 2 is nearing release and once again Lucas is saying nothing. No mention of how it is a children's film or anything like that. Episode 2 gets minor praise but the fans go nuts over Yoda. Here comes the spin doctor again. Lucas says that he did the Yoda fight scene for the fans because they have been waiting for this for a long time. This coming from the same man that trashed them 3 years ago and is constantly threatening fan sites of his films with lawsuits. Give me a break.
Now we get to his comment about LOTR. LOTR is a huge success and is everything people expected from his Star Wars movies. Of course Lucas has to rationalize to himself that somebody is doing a better job on a "trilogy" than himself . He also has to rationalize this to the fans that he is still considered "The Master." So he references himself to LOTR by saying that PJ may be doing 3 3 hour movies based off of one book but he is doing 9 2-hour movies based of of one book; which by the way wasn't even written. This statment does diminish the immense undertaking that PJ is taking. He then goes to say that a lot of his influence in writing Star Wars came from LOTR. Saying this obviously asociates him indirectly to LOTR and once again makes him get looked at in a good light. Now I know he was mis-quoted but still I think the intention was clear. To be honest I am really shocked that Lucas didn't demand an Executive Producer credit on the films becuase he showed PJ his Pre-viz technique.
Here is the truth:
Fact 1: Lucas is a hack as a Director. As a producer he is amazing but Director...horrible.
Fact 2: If it wasn't for that Kurtz guy, forogt the first name, the original Star Wars trilogy would have failed miserably, because Lucas wouldn't be able to control his impulses and eventually do something totally stupid like that scene in ep 2 with 3PO and the battle droids.
Fact 3: Lucas has surrounded himself with yes men so that nobody can ever tell him "NO."
Fact 4: Lucas never has and never will care about the people, i.e the fans, that made him famous. If he did care about the fans he wouldn't re-release the same movies on video every year with a superficial promo/behind the scenes on something Star Wars or threaten lawsuits to fan sites.
Fact 5: He will always spin something to his advantage and not care about who he makes look bad.
I know I am not alone in feeling like this. I went off on a little rant and I apologize for that but the man just frustrates me to no end. To see how he treats people but still gets away with it because so many people have a hero-worship for this man. When I hear the guys from the Matrix, or even objective film buffs, make truthful comments about the Star Wars movies but get blasted none the less really gets me angry. Please respond if you like but I would like to see opinions from people that do not worship at the altar of Lucas because I already know what I am going to hear from them.
