Not to hijack, but what do you all think of the film and DVD? I caught this on TV when I was 10 and thought it terribly depressing. Is it worth taking a second look almost a decade and a half later?

I haven't seen Deer Hunter in a while and my memory may be faulty but I seem to recall that from the helicopter's POV, there were hordes of Cong getting real close and the decision to take off was based on saving a greater number of people.
Of course I could be wrong about this.
I'd take a second look at the film. That it left you so depressed says that it hit you at a visceral level. To me, that says a film was working. Ten years later, you might be able to appreciate how it was working and why it left you depressed.
Also, if you haven't seen it, Bullet in the Head, directed by John Woo, provides a different viewpoint on some of the same themes. Personally, I thought BITH was more impactful than DH.

In my opinion, this is a truly great movie. The acting is superb, which makes you really feel for the characters depsite thier (personality) faults. Also, upon watching it again, I found there to be alot of hidden images and metaphors throughout the movie. The movie shows incredible attention to detail. I'd give this movie ***1/2 out of ****
